Surname RISK
« on: Thursday 02 December 04 12:37 GMT (UK) »
Posting a request for information on the RISKS of Stirlingshire and
Dunbartonshire. Also Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire or ANYWHERE!
What started as a general enquiry into my RISK ancestry has now become an ambition to try to connect all these families who lived in these areas.
From copies of family notes I have been given, it seems there were several brothers who first resided in western areas of Stirlingshire. Having searched several OPR films I have 3 substantial trees of RISK descendants, but as yet am unable to find a connection.
As these are now going back to mid 1600-1700 it is most likely
this link will never be established.
I would really love to hear from anyone with a connection to the RISK family in any way.
Am also more than happy to share information.
TIA,
Coline Murphy,
Brisbane.

Hello Coline,

I get the feeling I've already written to you about Risks buried in Denny Cemetery in Stirlingshire. If I'm getting muddled - which is entirely probable - I do apologise!

The MI on quite an impressive stone reads:

(Right Side of Stone)
CATHERINE ARCHIBALD RISK died 7th May 1881 aged 16 years
JANE KNOW RISK died 2nd April 1882 aged 16 years
JAMES CHARLES RISK died 3rd February 1888 aged 11 months
Interred at Dennyloanhead

(Centre of Stone)
In memory of MARGARET KENNEDY wife of James Risk
Died 28th June 1860 aged 29 years interred at Dennyloanhead
JAMES RISK died 24th May 1898 aged 76 years
JEANIE KNOX wife of James Risk who died at Edinburgh on 1st June 1922 aged 87 years
JAMES RISK youngest son of James Risk died 24th January 1961 aged 86 years
Cremated in Edinburgh

(Left Side of Stone)
MARGARET RISK eldest daughter of James Risk
Who died at Stirling on 21st December 1936 aged 81 years
MARY RISK daughter of James Risk who died at Stirling on 22nd November 1950 aged 91 years

(Bottom of Stone)
The Burial Ground of JAMES RISK of Bankier

There is one other stone where Risk is a middle name which reads:

In loving memory of THOMAS YOUNG, Farmer, Snaghead, Bannockburn
Who died 26th August 1910
JANE GENTLES his wife who died 26th July 1915
And their family
JEAN RISK died 10th November 1871
GEORGE died 29th November 1872
ARCHIBALD died 3rd April 1878
WILLIAM died 10th April 1878
ROBERT died 14th April 1914
JANE died 29th January 1933
THOMAS died 5th November 1937
MARGARET died 4th August 1944
JOHN died 13th February 1960

I hope this helps tie some of your loose ends up.

Hi Coline

My husband's 4 x great grandmother was Agnes Risk, b. 07.01.1751 at Cadder. Father William Risk.  Don't have any further info as yet on Wiliam, or Agnes' mother.

Agnes married John Forsyth after banns called on 11.05.1780 at Killearn, Stirlingshire.

Her daughter Jane/Jean Forsyth (1797-1859) married into the Buchanan family, a wealthy family of confectionery manufacturers.

Hubby's great grandfather Andrew Buchanan (1870-1942) carried the Risk name as his middle name.

If you have any matchings details of Agnes or William Risk amongst your research I would be delighted to hear from you.

Kind Regards

Ellen.

Hello Ellen,
This is wonderful.

Please note there is an underscore between the names.
My gg grandfather, Alexander Buchanan, was a brother of Andrew, who married Jane Forsyth. Alexander's wife was Mary Risk, hence the connection to both names for me.
I have LOTS of info to share.

Thanks so much for contacting me.
Best wishes,
Coline.

Hello Ellen and Coline,

Might I ask you something?  As Coline knows, I have a particular interest in Kippen.  The marriage entries for Agnes RISK and John FORSYTH are recorded in both Killearn and Kippen - so I had thought that Agnes probably came from Kippen.  If she was from Cadder, I wonder why banns were called in Kippen (or had her family moved there?).

Cheers,

JAP

Hi Judy and Ellen,
I feel reasonably sure the Agnes Risk who married John Forsyth was the eldest daughter of John Risk and Marjory Mclew / McLeod.
However, maybe Ellen has other information and until I hear more I can't be certain.
Will keep in touch.
Cheers,
Coline.

Hi Coline,

Well, it seemed likely with the Kippen connexion but ...

I guess there are the following possibles in the IGI (and how many more who are not in the IGI!!):
*Agnes 1742 Barony, parents William RISK and Janet WINGATE (WINGATE - there's a fine Stirlingshire name and with connexions to MICKLEHOSE/MICKLELLHOSE!)
*Agnes 1747 Associate Session Glasgow, parents William RISK and Margaret DREW
*Agness 1750 Associate Session Balfron, parents John RISK and Majery MCLEU
*Agnes 1751 Cadder, father William RISK

Will be interested to hear what Ellen says.  I guess you have more children to John F and Agnes R than John 1791 and Jean 1797 who are the only ones in the IGI.  Not to mention MIs...

Cheers,

Judy

Hi Judy,
Actually I don't have anymore Forsyths than John and Jean - could be the Buchlyvie problem again.
The Agnes Risk, 1750 in Balfron, is the eldest daughter of John Risk and Marjory McLeod, McLew, McLeu, etc. The next 4 children were all baptised at Buchlyvie. James was one of the earliest children baptised in the Buchlyvie Assoc. Session.
Cheers,
Coline.
