What happened to John McCourt?
« on: Saturday 28 April 07 14:27 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have recently found information about when the McCourt family emigrated to America...

Details from the passenger list are as follows...

John McCourt, 27
Isabella McCourt, 26
Isabella McCourt, infant.

They sailed from Liverpool on June 12th 1865 and arrived in New York.

I would love to know what happened to the family whilst they were in the US.

However, they will not show up on a census as by 1868 Isabella had returned to the UK and married my great great great grandfather Featherstone Bainbridge.

A son Thomas was born in the US, where I don't know, and there is no sign of Isabella (infant) back in the UK.

I'm assuming Isabella (infant) and John may have died? And Isabella and baby Thomas returned to the UK and family.

I would love to know where in America the family went and what happened to them over there, are there death records fo John and Isabella and a birth record for Thomas?  When did Isabella and Thomas return home and on what ship?

Are there any doucments which may yeild answers or not?

TIA
Legs

Can you give any other family info that might help a search? Where in UK were they from/born?

A John McCourt was witness for the naturalization of a James McCourt in NY City, 1866.

A John McCourt, tailor, was in a NY City directory, that time frame.

A John McCourt, porter, was in a Brooklyn directory, that time frame.

Any occupation you know of for John?

There is a John McCourt who married Isabella Thompson 1862 Durham, England registration district Auckland.

ADDED
Jane McCourt was registered Auckland Durham 1863 mothers maiden name Thompson.

So officially she was Jane

Hello,
The family were from Durham, UK.

They sailed from Liverpool to New York on  June 12th 1865.

I don't know anymore about them prior to t by this. I'm awaiting their marriage certificate which will yield more info on their fathers/occupation.

Interesting that Isabella is registered as Jane on her birth record.

Thanks x

If you look at the image of the passenger list, there are ditto marks under Isabella's name, then a mark crossing them out, even so it still has been transcribed as Isabella infant dau.

If John McCourt was a coal miner he would have moved on from New York.

Have you determined if he was originally from Ireland or perhaps Scotland and not born England

I may have spoken too soon about Jane McCourt, there is a death registered in Auckland in the same quarter age 0.
From the index you cannot tell who the parents are.

There is a John McCourt whose birth was registered Auckland 1864 with mothers maiden name Thompson.
He would have been an infant, but on the image those ditto marks are there again under female.

There are several records on familysearch.org that might be useful, if they are your John McCourt.

John McCourt, christening 5 February 1838,  Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England.  Father James McCourt, mother Jane Otway.

1851 census, West Auckland, Durham, England.  John McCourt, 13,  b. Newcastle, Northumberland.  Coal miner.  Parents James and Jane.  Siblings:  James Mccourt, Thomas Mccourt, Joseph Mccourt, Mary J Mccourt, Edward Mccourt.

1861 census, Plawsworth, Durham, England.  John McCourt, 23, b. Newcastle, Northumberland.  No occupation shown; unmarried.  Only mother Jane.  Siblings:  Sarah Mc Court, Thomas Mc Court, Joseph Mc Court, Mary Jane Mc Court, Edward Mc Court, James Mc Court.

If this is your John, and he continued to be a coal miner, he might have gone to Pennsylvania.

Fold3.com has city directories.  For Philadelphia, Pennsylvania:

1867 & 1868
McCourt, Isabella, widow of John, 908 Beach (residence).
McCourt, Jane A. , dressmaker, same address.

1869, both Isabella and Jane are not listed.

I don't know if this is your Isabella.
