Pub on Church St, Manchester?
« on: Monday 30 April 07 10:56 BST (UK) »
Hallo everyone,

Looking for any info about a pub on Church Street, central Manchester around 1840s, possibly called the Robin Hood. Landlord was William CALAR (my g-g-g-grandfather). Pub later run by his second wife Hannah and/or daughter Ann.

ANY information about either the pub or the street would be wonderful!

Thank you!

In 1821 William Calar was a Corn Dealer at 19 Cooper St

He was also listed as William Calar junior, so I guess his father was a William too?

In the 1841 Census:

Church St, Manchester (no mention of pub/occupation)

William Calar, 45, not born in county
Ann Calar, 45, not born in county
Sophia, 10, Lanc.

On Ancestry, someone is also looking at this family because the names have been corrected

MANY, MANY thanks for this info. These details are wonderful in sorting out some of the many family mysteries re. William.

PS. It was me who sorted the surname spelling on Ancestry - the very least I could do for the old chap.

Thank you everyone!

Hallo again,

Thanks to your info, I have now found a sister for William and traced her great-great grandchildren, a whole bunch of family I had no idea about. Thank you!

I have just discovered today that the landlord of The Robin Hood pub at 63 Church St. Manchester was my great, great grandfather on my father's side; William Calar 1796 -1842, buried at Eccles. This is all the more remarkable because I moved to Manchester from Wolverhampton in 1988, and my roots in this area were completely unknown to me until recent months. Strange that I have been living less than a mile from Church St for more than 20 years now (and which I pass almost every day)  and had no idea of my connection to the area, and that I now  live in Salford where my great grandmother, Anne Calar, was married. It was my research to find the identity of my 'lost' uncle, Phillip Wood, who had the mysterious (to me) middle name of Calar, which has led me to discover William Calar and my roots to the area where I have been living all these years. William Calar's daughter, Anne, was my uncle Phillip's grandmother. Thank you to those who have provided further information about William Calar on this page, I am very grateful to you. I may have discovered distant relatives on this page also, which is delightful.
