Marriage in 1838 - complete
« on: Wednesday 02 May 07 20:42 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have access to a marriage that took place in Oct-Dec 1838 registered in Newcastle upon Tyne, although might be in the parish of Long Benton, between William Laverick and Barbara Hipplewhite.

I am trying to ascertain whether William was a widower and his age.

Or the death of Jane Laverick Oct-Dec 1837 in Tynemouth - do death certs give spouse's details?

Any help appreciated.

I think you will have to buy the  certificate, I understand  that the Newcastle Records Office is closed until they build the new one  as it has been demolished

Unless someone know differently  :-\

Certificates are available for Newcastle on Tyne, from The Registrar,
 Newcastle on Tyne Register Office,
 Civic Centre,
Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8PS.

The record office may have closed, but all records and information have been transferred to Woodhorn, near Ashington, Northumberland. I dont think you can order certs. from there.

The marriage took place at St. John the Baptist. You can search Newcastle registry office's index online

http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/msearch.nsf/msearch?openform

and order the certificate direct from there. Newcastle registry office has indexed Barbara as both Hepplewhite and Wallace which is an indication it might very well be a second marriage for her.

To hopefully straighten things out.

Three Newcastle organisations.....

It is the Newcastle City Library that is in midst of demolition.
Ordinary library services are available in the several suburb branches.

The Newcastle Register Office is the place to get BMD copy certs for the Newcastle area. It is sited in the Newcastle Civic Centre

The Family & Local History section of Newcastle City Library is temporarily housed in the Newcastle Civic Centre ( but in a basement, away from Register Office)

There is no such org as the Newcastle Record Office.  The equivalent of a "County Record Office" ( which does not deal in certificates ! ) for the Tyne&Wear "area",  is called "Tyne & Wear Archives. This is in Blandford House, Blandford St, Newcastle. It is not closed. ( well it is, as I write this, but it will open tomorrow morning as usual)

Now moving out of Newcastle/Tyne&Wear, into the county of Northumberland....... Northumberland's County Record Office used to be sited in the town of Morpeth. This shut down in Sept 2005, then re-opened in Woodhorn, near Ashington, in Northumberland in Nov 2006.
County Record Office for Northumberland does not deal in BMD certs.

Michael,
Is the Family and Local History Section at the Civic Centre the place to look at old newspapers for the area? I will be in the area sometime in the next couple of months and want to look something up.
Regards,
Mrs Doc

Mrs Doc,

Yes.

By means of microfilm or the real thing.

In fact I was in Library (Civic Centre) today and us Parish-Records-Browsers were outnumbered and out-muscled by the Newspaper-Trawlers who take up twice as much table space.

Open 7 days a week. Staff helpful.
