Elaine

I recently received an identical enquiry about deciphering "Porterstown, Co Donegal".

I concluded that as there are extremely few townland-names in Co Donegal ending in -town, this was probably a mishearing by the Scottish registrar. I suggested that possibly one should consider that Portnason was intended.

Portnason is on the southern shore of the Erne estuary, just W of Ballyshannon.

Hi, back after a long time away, and looking through this again

aghadowey, you wrote on this post the place might be Porterstown in Co. Donegal but that it's the local name for an ear rather than a townland name.

What do you mean by an ear ?

Thanks, Warren

Looks like Porterstown but there no townland in Donegal with that name that I can find. There are 5 Porterstowns in Ireland in other counties.
See www.thecore.com/seanruad to search for townlands in Ireland. Be sure to change default setting from exact match. I searched for townlands in Co. Donegal ending in 'town' with nothing coming close and then townlands in all Ireland ending in 'terstown.'
Other possibility is that the place is Porterstown in Co. Donegal but that it's the local name for an ear rather than a townland name.
