I'll start the ball rolling.

 1. Anyone connected to: James Sutherland-21yrs-Caithness-Ploughman who came out on the "David G Fleming" arriving Lyttelton Dec 9 1863.

2. Anyone connected to :

A family SUTHERLAND buried Plot 137 Addington Cemetery, Christchurch.
James who died 1871.
James William died 1875
Archibald died 1876
Archibald Cook died 1876
Barbara died 1878
Catherine died 1909.

Will order Catherine's Death cert. as pre-1876 death certs. apparently contain minimal information.

Anyone out there connected to or know anything of above Sutherland family. Slightest detail or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Tiff

For your interest:

Robert Sutherland of Sutherlandshire married in 1874 Margaret McColl aged 17.
A year after their marriage in 1875 they came to New Zealand on the "Christian McCausland -they were 97 days at sea & arrived Bluff (then in its Campbelltown days) but first had to stay in quarantine at
Twai's Point, where their first child was born in quarantine.
From the book "on the Edge of the Bush" by Sheila Natusch, about  women in early Southland.

Hi Tiff

I am related to Margaret MCCOLL.  I have contact with descendants in Southland who are doing the extensive SUTHERLAND family tree.

Margaret married Robert SUTHERLAND on 21 May 1875 at Farr parish, Sutherland, Scotland.  Robert & Margaret were married by Rev. I. Stuart MACKAY, Free Church of Scotland. Usual residence for both Robert & Margaret was given as Mudale, Parish of Farr. Witnesses: Angus MCLEOD, Kenneth SUTHERLAND, and Sarah MCCOLL.  Mudale is by Altnaharra, about halfway between Lairg and the northern coast in Sutherlandshire, Scotland.

Margaret was born 03 Apr 1857 at Mudale in Farr parish, Sutherland, Scotland to Ronald MCCOLL & Margaret BETHUNE / BEATON who were married at Lairg 1850 (also registered in Farr parish).  Ronald's parents Ewan MCCOLL & Saly / Sarah MCCOLL lived at Mudale but Ewan (and probably Saly?), was from Appin, Argyll which is big time MCCOLL country.  Ewan was 91 at the 1851 census implying birth circa 1760.

On 29 May 1875, just 8 days after they married,  Robert & Margaret sailed from Glasgow on the ship CHRISTIAN MCAUSLAND, arrived Bluff, NZ on 30 August 1875.

Margaret SUTHERLAND nee MCCOLL died 1933.

A 100th anniversary Sutherland reunion was held in Ivercargill, NZ in 1975.  The reunion closed with a visit to the Wrey's Bush cemetery, where Margaret and Robert were buried.

Where I come in is that Ronald MCCOLL's sister Margaret MCCOLL married Angus MCDONALD at Lairg in 1830 and they took their large family to Victoria Australia in 1853 where their daughter Annie married Peter SINCLAIR in 1876.  Peter & Annie went to New Zealand soon after marriage.
