1901 Barmouth census - NICHOLLS/WILLIAMS
« on: Sunday 13 May 07 04:50 BST (UK) »
Would SKS be able to have a look at the 1901 Barmouth census for

Louisa Mary NICHOLLS
b about 1869 in Twyning, Gloucestershire
Single
probably employed as a domestic/servant

She married Hugh Evans WILLIAMS (my grandfather's brother) and they visited California arriving in April 1924, apparently  for the birth of their daughter's child, born in May.  However, Hugh and Louisa are listed as living in San Mateo, Calif in the 1930 US census so must have settled there.

Interestingly, the only marriage record I have found for them is Jul-Aug 1900 in Lancashire (where Louisa was working in 1891).  I wonder whether they got married in secret as Hugh  is listed as working in Barmouth in 1901 aged 28 and still single!

Hoping the 1901 info will give me a clue!

She's there in 1901, staying with (her sister also born Twyning) Elizabeth A Loxton and family, age 32, no occupation.  Her brother-in-law, Walter S Loxton, born London, is a hairdresser, working on own account. The parents speak only English, 4 children all born Barmouth.

Wow - that was quick!  Thank you so much.

Could I trouble you for the actual street address where Louisa was staying please?  The reason being that I suspect she may have met Hugh WILLIAMS locally -  "the girl/boy next door" sort of thing :-))

Many thanks in advance
Lizzie

The street address is given as Marine Gardens (just seems to apply to that house) - is that down by the sea front, near where they ran a cinema in the 1960s?  The house next door one way is Anglesea House, the other side I can't quite make out maybe "MainLee" House, then Stoneleigh.

Good luck, you have a lot of Williams around there!

Having looked through a few adjoing pages, I think the name applies just to that house and nothing to do with the street of that name in the town.  House may be out on the road towards Harlech as the Catholic Church is some way along before most of the town (although may not be so ordered, I think a census return is a bit like a postman's walk).  I couldn't find a piece description to help locate the houses but they sound like a series of single houses rather than a busy town street.

Head towards the beach over the level crossing, take the first right onto Marine Road continue on down and about half way down the name of the road changes to Marine Gardens.
