Is Tiff better than jpeg for posting?
« on: Sunday 13 May 07 12:38 BST (UK) »
Just wondering.... is it better to save an image as a tiff or a jpeg for posting on this board?

I'm no expert...but I believe that Jpegs take up less space...& so are better for posting on these boards.

Romilly.

Hi Jaylay,

I'm not a restorer, so I can't answer that part of the question.

But for some technical details:

I converted a JPG file to TIFF (using IrfanView) and uploaded them here:

the JPG file is 5KB, the TIF file is 70 KB.

As you can see, the JPG files displays here whereas the TIF file can be downloaded but can't be displayed here.

TIF is probably better for sending to a restorer, via email, and JPG for images which you wish to show on the board.

Bob

For the puposes of posting on rootschat Jpeg is more than adequate. what to remember with jpeg is to keep your compression to a minimum (within the limitations of allowable size for posting.

I'm sure that you have all heard about continual saving of jpegs gradually wearing the quality down by repeatedly opening and saving. Let's get this straight - you can open and close a jpeg as often as you wish without losing quality; SO LONG AS EACH TIME YOU CLOSE IT YOU USE NO COMPRESSION.

just be aware that if you do use jpeg compression you will lose quality.

Now what this boils down to is that if you have a scanned picture in any format, at let's say for example 600 KB and you wish to post it on rootschat you will have to decrease that 600 to 500 or less - so you have no choice but to compress the file - that means jpeg

The bottom line ----stick with jpeg but don't compress more thn you have to.
