McLeod - Sutherland Caithness
« on: Tuesday 15 May 07 00:44 BST (UK) »
so far I have

Christian Sutherland's father was William of badbea and his father David Sutherland of Dusdale...

I am happy to find the sutherland line, but most interest at this time is of the McLeod line

John McLeod m Christian Sutherland ( May 5 1822) she of Badbea and he of something that looks like quagbeg

children

Donald 1824
james 1826
mary 1828
william 1830
sarah 1833
farguhar 1839

James and william emmigrated to NZ in approx 1855
My family has suggested they were the first of 7  from a family of 11.
Farquhar and Esther were next to go to NZ.

Mary came next ( she was married to Donald Ross)

Then I am told a Catherine McLeod married to James Taylor came to NZ in 1886

Finally alexander, youngest of the sons arrived in NZ

Hello

Me again  :)

The only John McLeod that I can find of roughly the correct age with a father Donald is:

bpt 13 jan 1801, Reay, Caithness

Parents - Donald MacLeod and Margaret Loughton

Reay is the next parish to Halkirk.

My John McLeod was listed as 41 in the 1841 census, so could be him?

Death certs would be from Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  (1855 to 1956)

They might well have died before 1855, which is when the first sons went to New Zealand.

They were in an area that was owned by the Countess of Sutherland, whos's land was substantially cleared in those times and, as John was an agric. labourer, he might well have been evicted. Also there were a series of famines.

I've had a quick check but looking for a John M(a)cleod is very difficult up here.

I don't think that MIs would be much use - they would not have had the money unless the children subsequently paid for one.

It's very difficult.

Tracey

I think it's best to stick to one thread - it's getting confusing and the info is duplicated:

Please note that this has now been fairly thoroughly covered on the thread named above
