Hi Anita,

Thanks again for your reply. I can't go to the LMA at the moment because I am in Pennsylvania!

Hi Suzey,

the lookups that you have been doing are amazing and I'm hoping that I can add my family to your list. They have many generations of watermen/lightermen on the Thames and living in Australia I am limited to the information that I can access. I was able to check the Apprentice Bindings from 1798 onwards but would love to know of family watermen earlier than that date. I would also love if you could check the The Company of Watermen & Lightermen of the River Thames Admissions List for Pensioners 1794-1837 and The Company of Watermen & Lightermen of the River Thames Reassingments 1688-1908 for me. The surname is Puplett (Paplett/Poplett) and they were all mainly living in Woolwich/Bermondsey/Mile End. I greatly appreciate the time and effort that you have shown on everyone's behalf and hope that you will be able to help. I look forward to hearing from you and wish you a very Merry Christmas,
Regards, Jo :)

Hi Suzey
I'm so thrilled to find you. I have been trawling the internet looking for watermen on the Thames.... are you able to help another soul.
My ancestors (MARSHALL) were a long line of watermen on the Thames. Are you able to help? My Ancestor, WILLIAM ROBERT MAGNESS MARSHALL , was bound to his father, Jonathan on 14.9.1843
Also a brother JONATHAN MAGNESS MARSHALL bound to his father Jonathan on 8.11.1838
I believe he was born c 1815. Married in 1848.
Their father was JONATHAN MARSHALL .
Also, FREDERICK WILLIAM MARSHALL, son of William Robert Magness , bound on 10.4.1866
All listed as watermen.
I would like to go further back, if you can help.
Are you able to help. My mother tells me we are from a long line of watermen.

Hi Suzie

I am researching the Deal family in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.  They were all Watermern/Lightermen.  I believe Thomas Deal 1748-1825 might have drowned but cannot find any record of this.  Any help would be much appreciated.  JANCHAP

I too am searching for apprenticeship information about my watermen ancestors. Edward John LAWSON (my 3xgt.g'father) was born in Stepney in 1771, and was described as a "waterman" between 1795 and 1813. From 1815 to 1841(when he died), he was a "lighterman". His father was also Edward, and he probably died in 1789.
Edward John had four sons:-Edward John  b.1795; Nicholas b. 1799; James b. 1801;  Richard William b. 1815
So far, I have been unable to find out whether they also worked on the river.
For many years the family lived in the Ratcliff area of Stepney.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Suzey

I am new to this and am trying to find out about my relation who was a waterman or lighterman. His name is Richard Harris and he was born in 1793 in Southwark London, all i have is that he won the Coat and Badge race in 1814.

Hi
So many questions i hope someone could help,
back in 2008 you posted a load of Tuckey waterman.  I am researching William Tuckey born in london in 1802 approx and listed in the 1841 census and in baptism records for his children as a waterman or lighterman.

in your original list one william tuckey didn't finish his apprenticeship so am i right in supposing that he wouldn't have had the right to call himself a waterman in census returns?

also the william tuckey who it might be was apprenticed in 1812 when he would have been 10 - 11 years would that be correct?
is there anywhere that the apprenticeship agreements can be looked at?
Thanks to all the fellow genealogists out there, you're always so helpful
