Hi, I hope you don't mind....Could you look for a friends grandfather please? His name was John Humphrey born Amberley,1862-1946.  On the 1901 census he was living in Camberwell. It said that his occupation was Waterman/lighterman. underneath in smaller writing it says sm [or sw] gas co. he was also thought to be a sailor,
 many thanks. M

Hi Suzey,
If you have the time, I'd appreciate a look-up for John Healey b. 1852 in Bermondsey who is listed as a lighterman on his daughter's marriage certificate.  Unfortunately, I have no more information than that.
Thanks.

Hi Suzey,

A possible candidate for my gt grandfather Cornelius Harrington claims to be a lighterman living in Ratcliffe, London on the 1881 census. This seems unlikely since he was a labourer on all the other census' I presume he would need to have served an apprentiship.

Would you mind looking? If he's the correct Cornelius he should be born around 1855 in Westminster
Eaton (Woughton on the Green, Doncaster and N. London), Davis(Shinfield and London), Harrington (Ireland and London), Sutcliffe (Todmorden and London), Williams, Hollingsworth (Thaxted), Lane (Rotherhithe), Fuller (Chesterton, Cambs), Dilley (who knows where????)

Hello.  I'm new to this site and would be grateful on any information that can be found on my Tadhunter family of whom quite a few have been listed as watermen on the Thames.

Hi Sue,
Like others I have just stumbled across your excellent work on here and am hoping you may be able to help me please.
I am looking for any information at all on the Brucas family who were watermen / Lightermen but seemed to have a distinct aversion to anything to do with census etc!
Immediate point of contact is Elias Brucas born c1780 and his son James Brucas c 1808.
As usual spellings are variously Brucas, Brucass, Brocas etc. etc I'm afraid.
The family seems to have been based mainly in the West of London, Brentford, Putney etc. but also in the Westminster area and seem to have married Kentish girls at least twice.

Any information very gratefully received!

Many thanks for your help.

best Regards

Mike

Dear Sue

I wonder if you could look for any reference to any BIDDLEs (also seen with various phonetic spellings as BIDDEL, BEDALL etc).

My Gtx3 Grandmother (Dinah Biddle)'s marriage certificate in 1850 (residence address given as Putney for bride & groom) records her father as William Biddle Fisherman. Dinah gives her place of birth (c1829) as Greenwich, Kent.

A William Biddle signed as witness so I'm assuming (if that was her father) he was still alive in 1850.

She married a Joseph DEARMAN (b Wandsworth c1818), a Coal Porter who was son of Joseph Dearman - also a Fisherman.

Any refs to these names would be much appreciated
Davies, Edwards, Evans, Griffiths, Hughes, James, Jones, Morgan, Nicholas, Powell, Prytherch, Rees, Williams in Glamorgan, Brecon, PEM, CMN & MGY

Biddle, Budd, Clark/e, Davis/Davies, Elliott, Emery, Harper, Harris, Lloyd, Parsons, Phillips, Pitt, Reed/Reid/Read/Rhead, Rogers, Scandrett, Smith, Tyler & Waldron in Staffs, Worcs, Hef, Cheshire, Shrops., Middlesex & Surrey.
