TRAGIC DEATH - John McCreadie, 02 August 1879
« on: Wednesday 16 May 07 10:25 BST (UK) »
At 9PM on 2nd August 1879, John McCreadie of 8 Allison Street, Newton (on-Ayr) was killed less than one month after the birth of his son. The location and cause of death were recorded as “On board No. 1 tug boat Ayr Harbour” and “Crushed to death under the lever of an engine” respectively. As the Certifying Physician was “John Riddall, Surgeon”, it is improbable he was buried at sea. The 4th August 1879 edition of “The Scotsman” reported the death but identified him as “John Mackenzie”. However, in the following days edition, it was corrected to “Macreadie”.

To date, I have been unable to determine John's final resting place; if he was buried in Ayr or Ballantrae (as his father was living in Ballantrae and “Informant” on his Death Extract, I thought the remains may have been taken to Ballantrae for burial). After checking with North and South Ayrshire plus "revmother2" of this website, John's final resting place remains a mystery.

Is anyone able to assist locating this man's grave?

Refreshing my enquiry and hoping SKS can assist.

This is the story behind my search for the location of John's grave which would complete his son's private life story. I am compiling son John's private life to complement his Army Service record held at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.

The 1881 Census records widow Margaret and children Jane, Isabella and John still resident at 8 Allison Street, Newton-on-Ayr. Late the following year, they emigrated to Australia where, Jane married Alexander Adie WILLS in Queensland in 1895 and Isabella married Albert Ernest WYATT also in Queensland in 1899. At Townsville, Queensland on 14th February 1916, John enlisted in 15th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force (AIF). On 10 July 1917, he died of wounds. His final resting place is Plot 4, Row F, Grave 1, Strand Military Cemetery, Ploegsteert Wood, 2 miles south of Messines.

Do the newspapers in Scotland contain funeral notices similar to those in Australia - is it possible to find the local paper for the area & time and see if archives for same exist?

This would be one of the few times that I would think a paid researcher, preferable a local with a good knowledge of the area, could be of assistance.

Hi Q98

The local Council Offices usually have a Lair List (I've used this way to find graves for some of mine before - not in Ayrshire though). The Council covering Ayr and Ballantrae would be South Ayrshire Council:

http://www.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/

I'm not sure what department but it might be worth getting in touch with the Dept of Development, Safety and REgulation.

I presume that this accident would have been reported to the Procurator Fiscal  (no coroners reports in Scotland) as well but it's not likely to give info on the place of burial.

I am determined to locate this ancestor's final resting place. Is any resident of Ayr or its environs able to help?
