Hi,

The following was a part answer to a query on Rootschat way back on 19th Nov 2010 regarding newspapers and archives in Ayr.  The original poster was "grendlsmother"

" The Ayrshire Post archives in Ayr Library [/b]go from 1880 to date, The Ayr Advertiser goes from 1803 to date and the Ayr Observer goes from 1832 to 1930."[/color]

A follow up response suggested that someone on the Library staff was obliging enough to find the information requested.

This would be worth a try, but as the post was 8+ years ago, when staffing levels in Local Authorities were greater, things may have altered, or the archives may have been moved.  Someone should however be able to help or advise you.

Another approach might be to identify where his parents lived and died and whether there was a family lair in a nearby cemetery.  This could reduce the search area considerably

Good Luck
Istrice

My apologies, I have just revisited paragraph 2 of your original post.

Istrice

Possible for the Cotton Traders store, the address is showing as Dobbies Garden Centre, A70, Old Toll, Ayr KA6 5JJ

Re Crematorium, could possibly refer to Masonhill Crematorium, Ayr KA6 6EN ? See www.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/births-marriages-deaths/crematorium/

Monica
This is correct. It's owned by the local authority, South Ayrshire Council. Entrance to the road leading to the crematorium is opposite Dobbies' garden centre. The café at Dobbies does good business from mourners. Some who travel from a distance make a pre-funeral visit to the café.  "Cotton Traders" is a franchise inside Dobbies' store.
Edit. I suggest you contact Troon Family History Society. Publications on the website include Ayr Cemetery. You can ask about burial records and newspaper archives and contacts. Kill several birds with one stone rather than making enquiries in different LA departments. As someone else said, LA staff have been much reduced in the past decade. Crematorium staff in particular will be very short of time. Their priority is those recently deceased.
