Lorraine,

As it is such common name in a large population we really need to have the rest of the 1881 household posted on. It will make an 1861/ 1871 search much easier.

I can't find anyone to match. How certain are you of Joseph's age, does the 1881 census tally with that on his marriage cert to Elizabeth, and his death certificate?

This is a good circus/fairground link if you haven't already seen it:

http://www.thegalloper.com/

and another ongoing site for traveller refs:

http://www.passing-through.co.uk/

Good luck - you might need it!

One of our travelling ancestors was alive for 5 census dates and it's taken me 16 years to find her in just 1!

A lot easier now the indexes are becoming available on line though.

Best wishes

You mention that Caroline BAKER was your gt gt gt gt granny so it would probably be best to try and find some more information on her so that you can locate her in a census and see where she was born.  That way it will give you a new lead back to her parents as well.

It really is best to work backwards very thoroughly to make sure that everything you have is correct and it does give you new leads all the time.

Can you answer any of these?

Who/where/when did she marry

She must have had children - what were their names?  When and where were the children born?  Where did they live? When/where did they die? Who did they marry?

When and where did Caroline die?  And her husband?

You need to find all of this out - it really will help and it will be more interesting for you because you will find out lots more things about her along the way.

Look forward to seeing what you can post.

caroline baker was a circus performer called madam caroline born about 1840- 1860 as she was performing wire walkining in the late 1860s her husband is harry butcher and had seven children they changed their names and traveled all over the world her children birth daates are form 1864-1878 born all over the country same as her father joesph baker who traveled all over the country.

as the circus traveled  they had the children along the way
hence the problem
