Gambles/Jenkinson family
« on: Saturday 19 May 07 11:25 BST (UK) »
I researched my family tree all the way back to two people jacob jenkinson and elizabeth gambles. I found out they lived in hatfield woodhouse , i found out elizabeths parents were moses and harriet gambles but i can't find any more information about jacob jenkinson born in 1832. How can i find more information about him like who his parents were?

Found a Marriage Index entry ?

That would give Jacob's Fathers name and occupation and help zero in on him in the 1841 census.

He doesnt seem to be in Notts however .... could of course be a total mistranscription ...

In 1861 its spelled Jenkins and he was born Hatfield Woodhouse - they are enumerated in the Parish of Finningley, Notts.

So he's a Yorkshireman.

Oldest child is 7, born Finningley, so look for a marriage in that period.

Wife Elizabeth also born there ...

Yes, this is the marriage - albeit Doncaster implies Yorkshire, the District does include Finningley - so obtain the Cert to get Jacob's Fathers name..

Marriages Dec 1852

GAMBLE  Elizabeth    Doncaster  Vol 9c Page 655
Jenkinson  Jacob     do do do

I expect the 1861 Census just got the name wrong during the collection of the Schedules ..

Enumerated - 'collected' in the Census by an Enumerator obtaining or helping them fill in the Census Schedule paperwork, then collating it and writing it up in the District returns.

The latter is what has been digitized and used as the basis for a searchable name index.
