Gi'day from downunder,

I'm a newbie here so please bear with me if I'm not doing this right.

I would like to request of someone a search for any information on my GGGgrandfather who married Anne Chant.

•  Name: Silas GRAY M. Anne Chant
•  Sex: M
•  Birth: 27 MAR 1845 in Middle Chinnock, Somersetshire, England

Silas had a heap of kids
as did his sons
and their sons after them
Until they got to my father
who just had little ol' me.

Hopefully I've not requested info that is not in the 1841 census.
Maybe Silas Gray's children will be in one of the census.
There was William , Thomas, Paitience, Jemiima, Jane, Elisa and Joseph
I told you he was a busy man. ;D
Not a lot to do on those cold winter Somerset nights ,  I suppose.

If this is successful maybe I can be helped to find other links too searches already done for this family tree.
There are many others here in Australia researching their roots in Somerset.

Other family names include: Hallett, Garrett, Chant, Corbin, Fowler, Adams.

thanks in advance for any assistance you can give.

Robert

Too bad Ann's husband isn't on the 1841... I suppose he was Silas and she was the Ann Chant you mentioned ... The Silas born 1845 was their grandson ... is he your direct line?  :)

Totally Awesome !!!!! ;D :D

Very well done Tati.
I'm very  :) Pleased  :) and so will the other family members here in Australia. Some of whom have done extensive research already.

It will take a little while to absorb this info.
Fancy that.....Right down to the street address.

If it was not for the blurry image  :( of the West Chinnock area in Google Earth , I would probably see the very street and house now.

Let's see Tati, you have everybody picked right.

Answer to your question: Is Silas my direcrt line? ...............Yes he is.

I am the
son of Adolphus Wilson Gray      B.1927    M. Carmel Joy Wingrove - 2 children
son of Morley Wilson Leigh Gray B.1880    M. Mary Margret Quinn - 6 children
son of Silas Gray 2rd                   B.1845    M. Jane Garrett - 6 children
Son of Thomas Gray                    B.1819    M. Maria Adams - 10 children
Son of Silas Gray                         B.1790    M. Anne Chant - 7 children

Between the lot of them I think they single handedly populated half of Canada New Zealand and Australia :o Not to mention the Wingroves on my mothers side.

At this point Tati , I wonder if I could ask if I can impose on you again at some other time for further details of the families and their inlaws.
You have been so very helpful.

Prior to Silas Gray B. 1790, I only have his wifes Family details
Anne Chants Parents were Job Chant  M. Susannah Fowler.

The Reeves-Moffatt Family Tree at Ancestry.com
Link below , I hope i get this right.
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=reeves-moffatt&id=I15479
has all the details of the family from the first Silas Gray down to me.

The Ann Gray nee Hallett who lived "next door" was Joseph Grays wife B. 1821.  She eventually had 10 kids. :o
He  must have went to Delta, Ontario, Canada at the time of the 1851 Census.

So much history!

It's interesting to get to know ones family like this , you have helped make them come alive again with these few details

Thank you again for you help

I look forward to being on this board while I trace my families lives.

The many web sites I've been to in the Somerset area have been very helpful also

Bye for now

Robert

Makes my day, Robert  :D

Unfortunately, I can help with census returns but not much with the other stuff.  :-\ I hope someone local can help more  :)
Will try to find what I can on census - when did they all leave for Australia?

You say the Ann Gray who lived next door was Joseph's wife - I wouldn't think so  ??? Isn't she more likely to be Thomas' mother?  ???

You have Thomas's wife as Maria Adams but she seems to be Mary on all census returns? 1851 and 1861 I have posted earlier - here's 1871:
RG10/2411 7 6
Middle Chinnock, Somerset
1 Lower Farm

Mary Gray, head, wid, 47, Charwoman, b. East Chinnock
Elizabeth, dau, unm, 20, Machinist at Glove Factory, b. West Chinnock
Charles, son, 18, Ag lab, b. West Chinnock
Thomas, son, 16, Ag lab, b. do.
Harriet, dau, 14, General servant, b. do.
Alice, dau, 11, scholar, b. Mid Chinnock
Emma, dau, 9, scholar, b. do.
Henry, son, 7, scholar, b. do.

(there's a death for a Thomas Gray in March quarter 1863 Yeovil 5c 429)

and this should be her in 1841:
HO107/946/4 4 2 & 3
Middle Chinnock, Somerset

Joseph Adams, 60, Ag lab
Sarah, 55
Charles, 25
Robert, 22
Mary, 15
Thomas, 15
Emily, 13

Marriage Dec quarter 1844 Yeovil 10 873
Mary Adams - Thomas Gray

Thank you again Tati.

Yes, you are right, my mistake . :(

It's been a long day on the Web and those ancestors have too many kids and too many names alike.

The Ann Gray mentioned living next door must have been Thomas Grays Mother. :)
And Harriet "may" have been her daughter inlaw William Grays wife.
And to think she had 10 kids herself .
How did they do it in those days.?????????

Silas and Jane lived on the Isle of Wight until they and their children Clara and Walter Adolphus sailed to Australia with Walter and Eliza. They left London on the "Storm King" on February 1, 1873, arriving in Brisbane on May 3, 1873.
There are Grays and Garretts on the Isle of Wight too.

They settled south of Ipswich Queensland and became famers, railway workers and coal miners to name but a few of their occupations.

Once again you have provided me with more family history to feast on . :D

I've been at this all day so I'll take a break and come back tomorrow to put all this together.

Thank you Tati
and thanks for the heads up on the personal details.
The web sites I posted are open to the general public.
and thanks for the latest census material as well you have been busy today.
I hope I've not taken you away from your family today.

Good night.
