Elizabeth Cahill Wells
« on: Sunday 20 May 07 19:53 BST (UK) »
Can anyone look up Elizabeth Cahill Wells. She married Charles Greenslade in 1904 and on the marriage cert her father was said to be Thomas (deceased), boilermaker. Cannot track her before her marriage!!

Thanks

Hi Sandym,

Does it give her age at marriage?

I wonder if this is a possible candidate ...

Tracing the Wells family back to 1861 (where James is suddenly called Jonathan), they have 2 daughters who could be Elizabeth's mothers: Frances born ca 1854 and Caroline born ca. 1852.

I can see a death:
Frances Cahill
age 25
Dec 1878  West Ham 4a 6

but I haven't found a Frances Wells / Thomas Cahill marriage yet

Not sure how likely these 2 are*:
1871
RG10/4780 25 44
Southcoates, Yorkshire
4 Austin? Terrace

Thomas Cahill, head, 26, Ship Yard Labourer, b Worcester
Frances, wife, 17, b. Middlesex London

*BUT the 1891 has a Thomas Cahill, wid, 46, Boiler Maker, b. Worcester boarding at Poplar
He seems to be in Lancashire in 1881:

Her marriage cert states her age as, we think, 25 years. It is hard to decipher it.  I am looking into your info. 'cause its the best lead I have had so far.  The family certainly lived in the Bethnal Green/Mile End, Stratford area of London - that I know.  I know that the family were very poor and that her father had died young so maybe she was taken in by the grandparents

[Thanks for that!  My aunt who is 87 (Elizabeth Cahill Wells daughter) tells me that her grandmother came from Staffordshire. We are not sure how accurate this is!!quote author=Tati link=topic=234046.msg1253903#msg1253903 date=1179692852]

Just in case Thomas Cahill turns out to be the right one ...

I think I can see him in 1851, lodging in Worcester St Martin with a Davis family, age 6 born Claines (HO107/2042 473 48)

In 1841, there's one matching Cahill family in Claines:
HO107/1209/5C 24 19
Back Lane

William Cahill, 25, Coach Smith, Ireland
Maria, 25, Ireland
Marcella, 3, Ireland
James, 5 mo, Worcestershire

Maria and Marcella die in 1845 (Thomas is registered in Dec 1844) and by 1851 William is remarried to an Elizabeth Davis.

Thanks for all the information so far. Some of it, especially one bit of information, looks very promising. I am going to pursue all of this, and hope to report success.
