LOOK-UP 1841 census SCOTT
« on: Monday 21 May 07 07:31 BST (UK) »
Is it possible to find a  John William Scott b 1809 or 1819 in the 1841 census. I don't know where he was born only he was supposed to be a 'lawyer', according to his daughters marriage & death cert's. He emigrated to South Australian in 1848, married & died in 1850 so info on him is very patchy. Is it possible to find him in the census by occupation? I know Scott is a common name so it may be impossible - but thought I'd ask!!
Cheers,

The 1841 census is more basic than the following years. What you get is a rounded down age (mostly), no family relationships, whether born in county or not, Scotland, Ireland or 'foreign parts', occupation sometimes just for head of household, and hardly any middle names. The only census where the indexing allows searches on occupations is the 1881.
There is only one John W Scott aged 30, a town missionary, born in Ireland and living in Manchester HO107/583/12 folio 46 pg 30.
I checked the number of John Scotts in that age group and there were 400+ in England. As your post is on the England board, I didn't check Wales and Scotland, but that would add even more.

I did find 1 possible christening on IGI:
John William SCOTT  Chr 14-5-1820 at St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey, ENG
To John & Elizabeth SCOTT.
Would it be possible to find him on the 1841 census easily?
If he is an Ag lab or such that would rule him out.
My John was supposed to a lawyer, & he emigrated as a teacher.
Of course he may be Scottish - I haven't started looking there yet!

No John b. 1821 or John married to Elizabeth showing on the 1841 census in St Saviour. If this is your man, it's unlikely that he would at home with this parents anyway as I'd imagine he'd be studying somewhere. As there are no places of birth given on the 1841, just in county or not, it would be guesswork.
Sorry, I don't have time to search further now as I'm off to work shortly, but someone else might pick up the query.

Before I started going through the many John Scotts in Surrey, I checked that entry on the IGI, it's member submitted, not extracted, so not to be relied upon.
