Strange funny place names
« on: Friday 10 September 04 01:16 BST (UK) »
Hello Jimbo this is a great site it's fun to.I think most of us have seen on one census or another odd place names of birth. It was only a couple of weeks a got one myself. The 1871 census telling me one of the children was born in Cow in cheshire ???where the heck was cow? must be a village in the sticks. No it turned out to be crewe ::) bet you get a lot of post on this one ;D

We all know about the bizarre place names in the UK. Wetwang, Pity Me, No Place, Blubberhouses....I could go on...so I will... :-\  Booze, Twatt, Pratt's Bottom etc

Well one guy has made a journey around them and recorded it in his hilarious book Shakespeare My Butt!. Well, actually that guy is me, and I'm the author

There is lots of other stuff in there, including how sayings developed, how the place names developed, and too much more to mention.

You can actually see some extracts on www.marsupialelvis.com

Anyway, thought I'd share that gem with you...  :-\

Anyway...enjoy!  ...and I bet you lot come up with some stuff not in the book!!

I currently live in SUNSHINE.  Not strange or funny to me but when travelling abroad provokes some interesting responses - " like oh yes, the weather in Australia must be good but where do you live?' Uh, Sunshine', 'So what, it never rains?' "Well, yes it does,' 'So where are you from?'  you get the gist - just goes in circles. ;)

I lived for a while in RAMSBOTTOM.

I passed a place called HEAVEN once,[in the US] couldn't wait to see the sign 'You are leaving HEAVEN'.

A friend woke up on a long train journey in Scandanavia as the train juddered to a halt in a station. He rubbed the icy window, the sign said HELL

I really think you could make up a poem purely consisting of funny place names all put together in a suitable order!

The US has a lot of strangely named places...We have Nutsville, Looneyville, Dull, Gas, Boring, Rough and Ready, and Fearnot ( I found these on a website). Then of course there's Heaven and Hell, Horseheads, Tyre, and the list goes on.
There's even a place called Clifton Springs where the rich and famous used to bathe in sulfur springs. Smells like rotten eggs all year long. LOL!!!!!
