No as you say- no real clues there.

James Clayton married Edith Sharratt so there is no mistranscription there or being called by another christian name - a puzzle! He is an engineer ::)

Ha ha! Just found this  ;D  a couple of entries below James and Edith

1841 HO107; Piece 107; Book: 13
Tytherington
William Clayton 28 yrs engineer
Ann 29 yrs
Ellin 7 yrs
Maria 3 yrs
Hannah Harding 16 yrs silk spinner

all born in county
that would be Maria Cleaver -- I hope!

I feel as though I am now moving further away from our original quest and I won't give full details but Free BMD has a marriage for Ellen Clayton Dec qr 1854- possible groom Richard Mellor.
1861 census RG9; Piece: 2979; Folio: 40; Page: 17
has Ellen Mellor (looks like married) 28 yrs niece staying in Ashton u Lyne with a John Harding and his wife Mary (who seems to be 2nd wife because there are step sons called Fox, all Irish) all so complex.
I think this is Ellen Clayton and the Harding connection is there. She is back with husband Richard in 1871.
There is an Elizabeth Harding aged 10 yrs born Macclesfield but don't think it's Elizabeth Clayton - can't find the Hardings in 1851.

hope all this helps in some way or other and does not mess it up too much- I'm off on holiday tomorrow so might have to wait a couple of weeks to catch up.

best wishes to all
heywood

Dear Heywood
This is all super news! Wow - I never thought of looking at the Cleaver connection - never gave it a thought ! And Maria Cleaver is Elizabeth's sister all along! Yes the Hannah Harding connection is right too.
I guess James Clayton - engineer and his wife Edith may be related to William Clayton ?

Lots to look at here now. I will follow everything through very carefully and the other possibilities you have mentioned.

Do you know where Tytherington is near ?

Thank you so much - I just nipped off to finish the dinner and came back to a veritable dessert ! Coffee and mints coming up !

Hi again,
need to go and pack!
Godley and Werneth are near or part of Hyde - Google map will show you.
I had seen that WIlliam and Harriet and wondered but just seemed to be spreading out everywhere. So glad that it is coming together

best wishes again
Kath

Thanks heywood
Hope you have a good holiday
I have just been round in a huge circle and will probably be totally dizzy by the time you get back
Yes I traced William forwards - then found Harriet and traced them both all the way back again to find William still with his daughter Harriet in 1841 and a wife named Eliza. So could not be my William who is also on the 1841 with his wife Ann.
Mighty strange ! Both William's claim to have been engineers at various times (unusual I would have thought) and both come from Cheshire and both are born within a year of each other and both are driving me nuts and bolts!
Never mind I have definately made progress with what you have found.
