Question about an occupation - Seaman
« on: Sunday 27 May 07 02:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My Great Grandfather Edward McGowan was a seaman in Derry.

I know absolutely zero about him except his family lived on the Creggan Road and that when my Grandparents were married in 1912 he was already deceased.

I was wondering if as a seaman would he need to be registered some where? Maybe with a union or something.

Or, if he was on a particular ship would there be a record somewhere?

Just grasping at straws.

Mary Ann

Welsome to Rootschat.
This doesn't really answer your question but if he's buried in Derry City Cemetery the records are fantastic. Burial register gives age, birthplace, Christian names of parents, religion, etc.- far more than a death certificate would. There are also files to show who is buried in the same plot. I went in person years ago and got lots of help but you could try writing a letter and enclosing an International Reply Coupon with a self addressed envelope.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you both for your help.  My mum never talked about her grandfather so I didn't even know his name until recently. I think he may have died at a young age. However, his wife lived a good long life.

Thanks again.
