Free access to Times Online.
« on: Saturday 02 June 07 23:51 BST (UK) »
I believe I can describe using simple step-by-step instructions how to gain free access to The Times online archives.

Is this something that would be both valuable to RootsChatters and legal? There are no hacks or internet tricks involved.

I would be happy to PM it to a mod for review before posting.

Times Online is free if your local library subscribes to it and you are a member.
You need to access it through your local library website and enter your library card number and thats it - and its legal

Please acknowledge when a restorer works on your photos, it can take hours for them to work their magic

Please scan at 300dpi minimum to help save the restorers eyesight.

My concern is that you can gain access from anywhere in the country through the Bedfordshire Library.

If Beds library are not supposed to let this happen we may be closing the door to a lot of researchers by publishing details on how to do it. If this is a hole it will be closed.

Hi Paul,

If you are talking about access through Bedfordshire Library this has been mentioned in several threads. Here are a couple

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,221273.msg1165730.html#msg1165730

People all over the world are members of Bedfordshire Virtual Library and have access to The Times through their memberships. It is a wonderful service they are providing  ;D ...........Kris  :D

Hi Paul,

No not Bedfordshire, I belong to Bracknell Library (Berkshire) and you can access it if you belong to the library, you need to enter your library number though and access is not possible without membership which is free.

I was given this tip by the Times Online representative at the WDYTYA exhib in Olympia a few weeks ago, so it is an official line and the advice was freely given. You need to check your local library to see if they subscribe to the service as not all libaries do but I was given the impression that many do.

hope that helps clear any misunderstanding

As the general consensus seems to be 'This is OK', here it is:

Accesing The Times online, free!

1. Join Bedfordshire Libraries

Go to: http://www.galaxy.bedfordshire.gov.uk/

Click the 'Join Now' link and follow instructions.

I don't know if membership is retricted by postcode. I live in Bucks which is neighboring Beds so I may be privileged.

I have already been through this and so can't go through it again to list the steps. If someone would like to fill this gap in I would welcome an insertion here.

Please note this comment from later discussion:

... I clicked on the Bedfordshire Virtual Library, filled the form and left the "pick up" part blank. You only need to fill this in if you want a real library card. I also think there was a little button to select what kind of "membership" you wanted.

At the end of the process you will receive an e-mail containing a 'Library Card Number' and a PIN.

2. Go to Times Online

Go To: http://www.galaxy.bedfordshire.gov.uk/

Log On if required.

Near the bottom left of the page, click on 'Bedfordshire Virtual Library'.

On the left side, hover over 'Information and Reference' and select 'Newspapers Online'.

Click on the 'The Times' logo.

Fill in your Library Card Number and Pin that you got in your e-mail and click Go.

Locate 'Go To: "Newspapers"' and note the current password just below.

Click on the "Newspapers" link.

Enter the password you noted.

Click on the 'The Times Digital Archive' link near the bottom.

You're there! :) :) :)

You can now save a link to this location and get there in one click so long as you allow cookies.

NB: From time to time, the password changes. To get hold of the new password go through stage 2 again from the beginning.

One small hint for newbies here: Use 'AND/OR/NOT' between each word you want to find. It does not assume 'AND' like Google, it looks for the whole phrase you typed if you don't use these keywords.

I also joined last week using my correct address and post code Western  Australia and was surprised to find that it did allow me free access.
