I’m looking for info on James Hanna or Hannah’s family.
« on: Monday 04 June 07 19:55 BST (UK) »
I’m trying to find a James Hanna-or Hannah from Sligo Southern Ireland, born around 1890 , during the turn of the 20th century, James moved to Wales, with his siblings, I don’t know how many siblings there were, the children were all adopted in Wales, James was adopted into the Phillips family, and he took their name, James married Margaret don’t know when, they had a son Sidney Douglas Phillips, he married Mary Annie Evans 1941 In Carmarthen.

I have all the information from Sidney Douglas Phillips to the present day.

The family have told me they are related to the same Hanna,of Hanna Barbera cartoonist from America.

Hope someone can help with this search.

Regards

Gpaul.

Hello Gpaul,

You can view a transcript of the 1901 census for Sligo here www.leitrim-roscommon.com

I couldn't find any Hanna families when I searched.

I did find Richard Hanna in Griffiths Valuation living at Knappagh Beg in the parish of St John in Sligo. However there were no Hanna's in this townland in 1901.

Were the children orphaned?

Hello
Using the 1939 index and the 1911 census which I'm not allowed to quote for copyright reasons
I can see James Phillips married Margaret Ann Davies Sep qtr at Carmarthen 1906
8 Sep 1906 St Ishmael
James Phillips 23 platelayer Llantrisant   no father given
Margaret Ann Davies 23  Llantrisant father John fisherman

wit John and William Davies and William E Rees.

So James is born 1882/3

Sidney was their fifth child- William Ivor 1908,George Glanmor 1909,Olwyn James 1910,Sidney 1916 and then 3 younger children.

There is a death for James Phillips Dec 1967 Carmarthen age 85
He is a member of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants  1907 from LLanelly.
There are earlier possible entries at St Ishmael for him but he is always a boarder or servant living with other families.

1901 Coed Farm LLandefeilog occupied by Moses family
James Phillips 18 cowman on farm LLansaint
1891St Ishmael Gormount square
James Phillips 8 scholar Pembury
The 1911 census also gives a birthplace in Carmarthan.

Hi

Looking at the 1901 Irish Census for Sligo, there’s not one person with the surname Hanna listed, but there are 129 Hannan folk.  Similarly, the Sligo Census for 1911 lists just one Hanna surname (and she’s from Co Down) but again lists over 100 people with the surname Hannan.

The Hannan surname crops up in my own family and has caused havoc, as its wrongly recorded time and time again.  Hanna, Harmon, Harman have all been used instead of Hannan.

As you know there were siblings and may know a few of their names, while no one else does so can not look for them, there are 5 Civil Reg Districts for Co Sligo so any Civil Reg would be in one of these for them

There is also the name Hannon
This clap for example is about the correct age if he was born 1890 but not if he was born 1882/3
