As to the 1841 census image that has run amock. Looking at it for the first time quickly the last 2 chars might well be taken for 'ck'.  Notice the inconsistancy as on same image are William & Sarah Newell, transcribed as NEVELL.  Both Newells are written by the same hand on the census return.

John

Thank you once more for your thoughts and information. Neither William, James or Joseph seem to have married a Jane. The only vaguely possible marriage  I can see is a submitted entry for Thomas Endersby to June (possible mistranscribed Jane??) Dec 1798 in Cockayne Hatley. If at some point you could check that one out for me John that would be great.

David

Re my sidetrack onto illegitimate children of Alice Handley. Yes have spotted the death for Amy, think that must be her as doesn't appear to be another candidate. But Jane just seems to vanish - no death, no marriage on FreeBMD no likely candidate on later censuses - I'd better have a trawl through the complete index sometime in case she was missed from FreeBMD.

Do you have any idea why the baptism for Jane should read mother Alice Handly father Handly? It's a puzzle to me.

Error by the scribe perhaps, but I'd like to see the entry in the register to see exactly what it looks like

Did you notice that Martha had an illegitimate son also, named Nimrod!

Hi David
I think I will have to get in touch with the lovely people at BLARS again - my Wrestlingworth lot do seem to cause me problems!

Yes I saw Nimrod (what a name) - I can't see a birth registration for him only one for a mystery Obadiah, though Nimrod did die in 1848 poor chap.

I do wonder if Alice's illegitimate children are something to do with why she did not give her father's details at marriage (nor did James) - not sure how though, maybe John Handley refused to come to her wedding?
