IP address
« on: Sunday 10 June 07 23:26 BST (UK) »
Hi

Recently the "logged" area on my messages has changed so that there are numbers.  When I clicked onto those numbers, a small window opened to explain IP address.

Why the change, and what is IP address?

Regards,   Kathleen

not sure why the change but, IP is Internet Provider, and the numbers identify your computer. Everybody who is logged on to the site has a unique number. Only you can see your number - nobody else. (well except maybe the mods)

The numbers, which are different on my different postings, are quite visible on the open board.

No, they're not visible.  Also, mine are visible only when I'm logged in, and they are different on different boards where I've posted.

You will only see your own IP address - nobody else can see it except the moderators.  It is a unique address that is assigned to your computer by your service provider each time you log on to the internet, so will change from time to time.

Thanks Gar and Bill,

Thanks to both of you.  Can you now help me understand why the number is quite different on my different postings on different boards? ???

Unless you are a business...you don't have a dedicated IP address. Your internet service provider...for example Yahoo....only has so many addresses to assign to it's users. Therefore, you get a temporary addy.....and next time you post it will probably be different...but from within the same block of address numbers that your IP has available to assign.
Hope that makes sense!

Thank you for helping to clarify this.  I didn't mean to belabour the point, but it seemed so strange.
