Hi,

Came back for another look, only to read the sad story above. I guess that more or less wraps it up.

There are certainly some tragedies hidden away in our ancestry. One of my direct ancestors had 5 children stillborn or died in infancy within 10 years . . . luckily a further 2 survived, but it's hard to imagine the distress and pain . . . . .

Except for little William  ??? I'm still wondering what happened to him.

Hi mike and Jan, i wonder where William went but you never know he might turn up some time and it must have been very upsetting for the parents of five stillborn children.  I know one of my grannys died after she had her last baby, same month, there were 11 children left to be taken care of by their elder brother. Such sad lives. :(  Thank you for your help as all ways. Gladys  :)

Just a final thought on this. Maybe William was adopted, either legally, or informally taken in by a friend or relation. In either case his surname may have changed. Not sure what happened about such things in those days.

Hello, Have a look at 1841 census image in Ridgmont  household in name of Spring.

HO107/6 Folio: 6 Page: 7

It is transcribed as William Hunt age 15, but the surname I think starts with a 'K' compare it to Keep further down the page, & it ends 'ant'

and he's in household headed by Samuel Spring age 30, who might well be the brother of Maria

... or am I totally wrong ....

Cheers John

John,

I think you're probably right. Good thinking, searching on the mother's maiden name.

This is a list of Springs born at Ridgmont according to a parent search on IGI:

Father:  JOHN SPRING    Mother:  MARY  [surname shown as COX in one record]

JUDITH SPRING chr.26 APR 1801 d.25 JAN 1804
MARIA SPRING chr.24 FEB 1805
WILLIAM SPRING chr.29 MAY 1809
SAMUEL SPRING chr.22 APR 1810
MARY ANN SPRING b.10 JAN 1812  chr.29 MAR 1812
JOHN SPRING chr.04 FEB 1816

There may be others, but there is also another Spring family a generation back with the same parent names.

My only reservation is that I couldn't find any further reference to a William Cant/Kant in subsequent records, but we all know that people can disappear without trace . . . in my own family, there is a 40 year gap in one man's life until he suddenly re-appears in 1891 as a widower, and I have no idea where he may have been in the interim.

Mike,

Looks like on 1841 William Kant ? is with grandfather John Spring age 55. In the next 3 houses are his married sons Samuel, William & Thomas. These three families are door-to-door on 1851 census, but no sign of grandfather John & our William.

Regards John

PS.  I notice Partridge listed in your name interests - where are they from ?

Good find John. I think it's definitely Kant - it's not an H as in Hannah 3 entries lower on the page

Hi mike, David & John,  I have John Spring and Mary Cox with children also John Spring and Ann Pedder.  Would you have the 1841 census for Samuel born 1810 as i never did get round to find him also William Cant with his grandfather in 1841 as you mentioned.  I do have my line Samuel Spring with Abigail and children.  I am very grateful for your help and appreciate it.   Gladys :)
