Request Completed- John CAPON Last seen in Lidlington
« on: Thursday 14 June 07 20:26 BST (UK) »
John Capon pos Caton ( the surname keeps changing 1784-1785) I know he married Martha, John died 1785, Martha in 1772 both in Lidlington.  Joseph pos their first child born in 1755 in Lidlington. My problem is I cannot find were John was born. I have the parish register for Lidlington 1560-1812 ( if anyone would like a look up I also have Clophill) and there is no sign of them before 1755. I think John could of been born approx 1730  So if you have a missing John in your tree or could help please.

Do you have their marriage? If so could we have details please?

Just noticed your thread last year. You didn't have the marriage then. Did you check for anything in the parish chest, eg a settlement certificate which might indicate where they were from?

Even if someone has a spare John Capon there's absolutely nothing to link him to Lidlington - even then he doesn't appear to have married in Beds

The only marriage I have been able to find for a John & Martha is

1749 London Or Northampton St Sepulchre on the igi. When I looked at Northampton there is no Capon/caton, and no obvious match in London for John.

If you're struggling, as you obviously are with this, you need to follow up every lead, no matter how irrelevant it may seem. I would get the Northampton St Sepulchre microfilm from your nearest LDS and see if the marriage actually took place there, and if so whether there's any other detail. If it was 1755 you might get lucky and get a couple of witnesses as a result of the 1754 Marriage Act.

It's a pity that the IGI marriage entry is so ambiguous, but it's one of these modern batches where no source is given so there's no telling where it came
from.

Northamptonshire is very poorly covered on the IGI so just because there's nothing on there doesn't necessarily mean that they weren't from that county.

Do you know what John's occupation was?

Regards

David

PS Alternatively try a request on the Northants board for a look up in Northants Marriage Index

Thank you for your suggestion David and I will follow it up, as I have found that not everything is on the igi, I found a few more children in the parish reg for Joseph, John's son.  I did find a birth on the IGI for a John Capon 1730 parent's Benjamin & Sarah. In Leyton Buzzard John's eldest daughter's name is Sarah. But I think I need to find his marriage.
I do not know what his occupation was, but for many generations they seemed to of been, benvor servant's! brewery worker, drayman, so just maybe.

Thank you David

Boyd's marriage index lists that 1749 marriage as being at St Sepulchre, London.   This doesn't mean that it can't be your John and Martha - people didn't always marry near home.

Thank you Gallium
So London it is as the IGI was unclear London or Northampton. That helps narrow the search.

Have a look Beds Archives search site:

That name seems to be linked to Leighton Buzzard prior to 1755 as you will see.  If they were this family there may be surviving Wills
