I've cleaned it up, but it appears to have some sort of "wash" over it so I'm not game to do much more otherwise that effect will be lost.

Many thanks for your efforts Caz, it's much appreciated. I think the wash on the photo is where something was spilled on it and cleaned off. The original is a matt finish and I didn't want to spoil it further by trying to clean it.

Aahh, that explains it.  In that case it can be cleaned a lot more than what I have done but to get the very best restore, can you rescan the pic at 600 dpi.  There is a scanning tutorial at the top of the photo board if you have any problems.

If you can't rescan, then I will keep going with this one.
