Ancestry searches
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 13:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Is anyone else finding that the searches on ancestry aren't returning hits that are there? I was just searching an enquiry from someone on here and put in Thomas Johnson, born 1827+/- 5 years, residence Yorkshire for the 1841 census and it returned no matches. But when I take out Yorkshire, loads of hits are returned, some of them having Yorkshire are the county

 ??? ???

does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?!

Modified: is it because I had exact matches ticked? I thought that only affected the name though?

I wouldn't say that what you are doing is wrong at all.  I think it is because of the nature of the data on the 1841 census.  No specific place of birth could be recorded, except this: was the person born in the same county as the census place.  You don't mention what you did about that box :-\  I do know that I have experienced similar problems and as far as 1841 is concerned, sometimes less (information) is more!

Likewise, I find it best to start searching with the minimum information, then add parameters to narrow it down if there are too many results.

Hi Carrie

I always tick exact searches - otherwise I get hundreds of nonsense items returned!  I have found, over the past couple of months (probably since the Scotland Census were added) that location OFTEN omits many possibilities. I have no idea why, other than the search routines are not working properly. Location seems more likely to work if I search a specific census rather than use the "UK Census" option which used to be my favourite way to search. As far as 1841 is concerned, resident county SHOULD always work, birth only if born in the same county as the census place, as specified by Nell.
