Hi Ruby

Are you talking about the crests that some people have on the left side of the screen under their name?

To find that go to the button near the top, just the left hand side of the large Search Rootschat button called profile.  Click that.

On the left hand side of the screen two boxes now show saying Profile Information and Modify Profile.  If you pick Rootschat Profile Information you will find the crests and other bits of information you can choose about your profile on Rootschat.

Best wishes and welcome to Rootschat  :)

You need to be aware that Coats of Arms belong to individuals and their descendants not to surnames.  You thus need to be very careful how you use them.  In theory you can be prosecuted for using a Coat of Arms which has not been granted to you personally.  This however has not happened for many years in the case of individuals although commercial companies have been known to take action.

Sorry, I don't really know how to use this sight, but I'm trying to get in contact with the Ruby who posted info about Elizabeth Glover (back in 2007) and Joseph Duncombe.

I am a descendant of Joseph and Elizabeth through their son Henry (married Nancy Turner) who had a son also named Henry (2nd marriage to Cornelia Elsie Barnes) who is my grandfather.

Hello Ann,

Welcome to Rootschat!     I hope you find lots of information here.

It appears Ruby has not been on RC since February last year - but with any luck she will get notification of your post and will reappear.     If you wander around the boards a bit and make a couple more comments - even on this thread, you will soon tot up 3 posts after which you will be able to send Ruby a Personal Message   (PM) - by clicking on the little green scroll just under her avatar.

Good luck!

It is interesting that Ruby's avatar as shown in Wiggy's post although it is annotated as the Dunscombe crest is actually the Dunscombe coat of arms.  The crest normally sits on top of the helmet in the coat of arms and it is not clear to me from the avatar that any crest is depicted.

It is essential particularly for family history purposes to be very clear about the distinction between the crest and the complete coat of arms as in the reference books they are frequently documented separately and can sometimes be used to confirm different ancestral lines.
