Hello Marjorie

I can see now that - even with a stretch of the imagination - that name could not be 'Lentune'!

It looks as if it could be 'Vienna' or something like that but, hopefully, the Curator of the St Barbe Museum will be able to put you right.

Best wishes

Lyn S

This is an 1840 map of Lymington (not sure it extends far enough though)

Looks as if a copy of "Lymington High Street Then & Now" by Robert Coles 1984, might hold the answer.

I think it is Vienna Rows and "V Cottage" below that could be Vienna Cottage which is in Bridge Road.

It's mentioned on the Hampshire Treasures pages http://www.hants.gov.uk/hampshiretreasures/vol05/page186.html

Hi Shaun

The photo copy of the name was in fact sent to me by Nell presumably from an original census.   My original query comes from a birth certificate which gives the address of Viensia (?) Row - and the photo copy looks VERY similar - however, no cottage name or number given on the certificate,  so I don't think it can be the same property, unless, of course Vienna Row was in Bridge Road!

Thank you also the the Hampshire Treasures page - what a super site - I will explore that more!

Hi Bearkat

Thank you for the 1840 map.  As you say I don't think it extends quite far enough because, from info. received, I think it was at the other end of Gosport Street.

However, I will go to the library and look for the book suggested.

Very many thanks.

Looking at the 1851 census there was a Vienna Place next to Vienna Cottage in the Gosport St/Bridge Road/Miller Lane area .

Not sure if this is any use but Hampshire RO has this Will:

Will of Benjamin Rogers of Vienna Cottage, Lymington, Hampshire, Gent 1831

Oh well done Shaun!

I looked through the enumerator's schedules until I found it.  It did look like Vienna, but I didn't want to suggest it, just in case.

Yes that is brilliant but I am looking for (what now appears to be) Vienna ROW- not cottage, it is definitely ROW and no cottage name or number given unfortunately.   But it would appear from all the info. you have all given me that Viensia is in fact Vienna.  So it must be in that area.   Very many thanks for everyone you have made this site come up trumps once again!
