Hi looking for info on  4xgrandparents
OPR Cranston Hamilton Sandilands 1791
John Hamilton & Jane  Sandilands acknowledge their irregular marriage.
OPR children born Cranston between 1792 1808
Jean/Jane
Isabel m David Guthrie
Mary m John King
John
William m Christian Malcolm
Hannah m John Gillis/Gillies
Francies {Male]

1841 census shows a Jean Hamilton aged 80yrs born East Lothian dont know if it is my one or not.

Would love to know more about John Hamilton & Jane Sandilands
One theory on Jane Sandilands is she was born abt 1769 parents William Sandilands & jean Pittiloe/Pattullo
Any help on this family would be great

Hi Kate,

FreeReg has some Dunbar burials. It notes that it should not be considered 100% accurate, but I think it does give a rough idea. There's an 1846 burial for, I would assume, the same Jean Hamilton. No other details unfortunately. There's also an earlier burial in 1819 of a John Hamilton but again, no other details to whether this is your couple. :(

Any idea why they would be in Dunbar? Children, etc?

Hi Kate,

My Humes are later in East Lothian, 1820s to the 1880s. Before that, I've got them in Coldingham but no further back I'm afraid.

I'm actually hoping to get to Dunbar after the summer, to see family and hopefully get a chance to look for the ancestors' graves. I'll keep a look out for any Hamiltons. :)

Hi Kate,

I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. I was up at Dunbar and went searching around the parish church's graveyard but I'm afraid a lot of the older stones aren't in great shape. :( I only found a few of my own branches, but those were mostly in the newer section.

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  for all Scottish Records

Small point the marriage was 1791, did the record give any additional information?
HAMILTON   JOHN   JANE SANDILANDS   13/02/1791   Cranston

Children born Cranston after Mary.
(Jane was noted as Jean on the first 3 births, this is quite common in Scotland)

ISABEL 1/03/1795 – Borthwick, Midlothian
JEAN 12/08/1792- - Crichton, Midlothian
MARY 8/10/1797
WILLIAM 21/02/1802
HANNAH 25/12/1803
FRANCIES 4/11/1805 - Male
JAMES 31/03/1811

Five John Hamilton’s born 1760 – 1775, none in Cranston. More than 100 elsewhere.

No record on SP for Jane in East Lothian or elsewhere.
