Census Look-ups
« on: Thursday 28 June 07 09:00 BST (UK) »
Hi
I wonder if someone would be kind enough to help me with the Weir family.

John Granger Weir was born in Scotland on 9 Oct 1904 at "Ravenslea", Bearsden, Glasgow and had several sisters. His parents were Walter Weir and Helen Granger they apparently married in 1895 at the Grand Hotel in Glasgow.

Walter and Helen were apparently 2nd cousins & Helen was born in 1870 and died in 15 Feb 1936.

I think Walter's father was James Weir and Helen Granger's parents were Catherine Weir and John Granger (I found their marriage in the IGIs as 15 June 1866 in Cadder, Lanark, Scotland).

I also have been told that James Weir's Father was also a Walter Weir - there seem to be a lot of Walter Weirs in Lanarkshire in the IGIs I'm hoping  some census results might help me sort things out.

I would be very grateful for any help or advice anyone can provide.

many thanks
Liz

Hi Liz

I can help with some information from the Scottish Census, but I don't have access to the original images.

In 1901 I found a Walter and Helen living with Helen's parents:-

Hi

I went back to the 1891 as I was unsure if this was the right family, given that you found a Helen to John and Catherine, and this Helen was with a John and Helen.

In 1891 there is a John, occupation Job Master, wife Catherine and daughter Helen.

Could John have married a second time?

Hi Karen Lee
I suppose he could have married a second time or perhaps it might have been a transcription error putting down Helen twice ?? - I wonder?? Were there others living with them in 1891??
This is very good of you thank you so much.

It is likely that there was a transcription error, I did consider that after I had posted that reply.  Since I cannot see the image it is difficult for me to say.

This is the family in 1891 :-

Fantastic. I will have great fun sorting through this - how kind of you and my relative will be thrilled - she really knew very little of her Fathers family it will mean a lot to her.

Thank you so much!!

No worries Liz

Just let me know if you want me to try and find any of these families any further back to 1841.  So pleased that it has been useful for you.,

Hi again
That would be wonderful if you could do these look ups.

Catherine Weir b abt 1839 in Cadder Lanarkshire I think from the IGIs that her parents might have been James Weir & Helen Robertson.

John Granger b abt 1839 at Kirkard, Peebleshire

James Weir b abt 1840 at Barony/Glasgow, Lanark. (Father Walter Weir)

Agnes Liddell Weir(?) b abt 1840 again at Barony.

I realize some of them will be touch & go whether they were born by the time the census was done. I found 6 children for James and Agnes in the IGIs & they list her namne as Agnes Liddell Weir - I wonder if this was really her maiden name - more marrying relatives perhaps?? Family Search web site seems to be on strike at the moment just as it was getting interesting!

Many thanks (again) Karen Lee.

Liz

John GRANGER Serv 18 Agricultural Servant born Peebles Peeblesshire

I found Agnes Liddell WEIR :-

1841 Census Scotland Lanarkshire Barony
ED 9/ Parish # 622

WEIR
Walter 35 Farmer born Lanarkshire
Ann 35 born Lanarkshire
Walter 13 born Lanarkshire

Thomas STEVENSON 15 Ag Lab born Lanarkshire
Mary GILLESPIE 15 Female Servant born Lanarkshire

I could not find a James son of Walter on either the 1841 or the 1851. There is a James WEIR aged 10, in service as a Farm Servant, in Lanark, family of HARVIE.

1851 Census Scotland Lanarkshire Maryhill
ED 11/ Parish # 622/ Page 7
Burmulloch

WEIR
Walter Head Marr 48 Farmer of 100 Acres Employing 2 Labourers born Barony Lanarkshire
Ann Wife Marr 48 born Barony Lanarkshire
Walter Visitor Unmarr 23 Spirit Merchant born Barony Lanarkshire
William Son Unmarr 16 Employed on Farm born Barony Lanarkshire
Robert Visitor Unmarr 14 Spirit Merchant born Barony Lanarkshire

Agnes L Dau Unmarr 10 Scholar born Barony Lanarkshire
John Son Unmarr 7 Scholar born Barony Lanarkshire
Walter Servant Unmarr 28 Ag Lab born Barony Lanarkshire
Walter S Nephew Unmarr 10 Scholar born Glasgow
Margaret HOW Serv Unmarr 2o Dairy Maid born Auchtermuchty Fifeshire
James SMITH Serv Unmarr 16 Ag Lab born Ireland

Having 4 Walter WEIRS in the household much surely have been confusing.   Pretty sure that Walter aged 23 is son of Walter and Ann, Walter the servant must also be a relative of some sort.  Robert is also probably son of Walter and Ann although listed as a visitor............... maybe he and older brother Walter work somewhere else and were home for a visit.

Hope that this is not too confusing.  Just let me know if I have missed someone please.

Cheers
