David Rees born about 1834 Llandovery
« on: Sunday 01 July 07 15:39 BST (UK) »
David Rees b abt 1834 Llandovery Carmarthenshire.  Marriage cert shows that he married Catharine Morgan on 20 Nov 1855 at Brecon and that his father was Edward Rees a shoemaker.  I have David and family on every census from 1861 to 1901 but have failed to find record of his birth or his parents on census or Parish Records at Nat Library or Powys Archives.  Can anyone help please?  Thank you.

Hello Osprey, many thanks for your message, yes I,ve tried the Carmarthen archives without success, the man is a bit of a mystery, no trace of birth/baptism nor any mention in 1841/51 censuses and then pops up reliably every year from 1861 to 1901.  Edward Rees, David's father is equally elusive, I have an Edward Rees on the 1851 census, a shoe maker living at Brecon with wife and three children all born in different places but there's no way to connect him to David.
Thanks again Den.

How about this one for 1851?
can't read street address, Brecon St John Evangelist HO107/2489 folio 317 pg 5
David Rees 17 unm house servant b. Llandovery, Llanfair ar y Bryn
in the household of Rees Parry 47 innkeeper & maltster
transcribed as Davie on Ancestry, but says David on the census.

Was he married in the established church or non-conformist? He might not have been baptised in the parish church. The Genuki page for Llandingad gives the whereabouts, if in existence, of the various non-conformist records.

If the Edward Rees you're looking at in 1851 is born Llanidloes at HO107/2489 folio 375 pg 16, the oldest child has Rumney Iron Works as her pob, so this could be the family in 1841
Uchlawrcoed, Bedwelty, Mon HO107/750/16 folio 43 pg 8
Edward Rees 35 cordwainer not born in county
Mary 30  not born in county
Humphrey 3 not born in county
Elizabeth 1  born in county

No David though.

There is a David Rees aged 8 in the Llandovery Union Workhouse in 1841 HO107/1386/7 folio 61 pg 2.

Hi Osprey, Many thanks for your two posts.  Yes we are on the same Edward Rees, wife Mary and children born at several locations but cannot connect him to David.  David was married at St Mary's chapel in the parish of St John the Evangelist, Brecon, the 1851 entry you sent looks a possibility as does the Llandovery workhouse.  Thankyou for your kind help.  Den.

I am also looking for an Edward Rees!  2 in fact!

My great great grandfather was Edward William Rees - born in 1825 in Llanidloes - and he was the son of Edward Rees - a school teacher.

If anyone has any information about this part of my family or any information relating to the schools that would help me identify E Rees senior - I should be very grateful.

Did you manage to solve your mystery regarding David Rees. I only ask as with the research I have carried out I believe that he may be my GG Grandad.
