1847 Roxburgh
« on: Monday 02 July 07 01:20 BST (UK) »
My ancestor, age 60, died at sea, on his passage to Canada. His name was John Oliver, born 1780's in Oxnam, MO: Jannet Smail, FA: Thomas Oliver: tenent farmer: I searched the OPR'S and found birth listed: cannot find any Marriage; Is it possible to locate it?  Found John Oliver[age 60] and Jannet Smail[age 80] in Southdean -1841 Census listed as Paupers; John's wife was Agnes Rutherford[have marriage date] one Dau.-Jannet Oliver accompanied parents in 1847 & died very shortly after arr. but is not listed at Gross Isle. Agnes was the sole surviver and is found in 1851 census in Dumfries, Upper Canada. Can anyone tell me about the social/historical conditions which would induce an old man to leave kin and homeland to brave the wilds of the Colonies? Was there a gov. policy in effect: Was passage paid, as it is unlikely a "Pauper" would have to resources to embark on relocation. Any assistence would be greatly appreciated.
