Hi Rootschatters

Several years ago I was looking at a film of a Yorkshire Parish Register and came across this reminder from the Minister that those who wish to search the Registers should pay for the information they seek.

                        An Advertisement to the Reader

Behold three Armies here in rank and file,
The middlemost of which doth only smile.

The first is led by Captain Birth, a man
whose life is like himself, but just a span.

Brave Major Wedlock next in order comes,
Whose troops are ushered in with lovely drums.

And to conclude, victorious General Death,
Brings up the rear and stops my muse's Breathe.

Which of these three your names are listed under?
Look in that Booke, good payment is no plunder.

                                                           John Lindley
                                                         Minister of Snaith
                                                          Anno Dom. 1657

SUZY LEE

Pappy’s gal Suzy Lee fell in love.
She planned to marry Joe.
She was so happy bout it all,
She told her pappy so.

Pappy told her, "Suzie Gal"
You’ll have to find another.
I’d just as soon yo ma don’t know,
But Joe is yo half-brother.

So Suzie forgot about her Joe
And planned to marry Will,
But after telling pappy this
He said "There’s trouble still".

You can’t marry Will, my gal,
And please don’t tell yo mother,
Cause Will and Joe and several mo
I know is yo half-brother.

But Mama knew and said
"Honey chile, do what makes yo happy.
Marry Will or marry Joe,
You ain’t no kin to pappy!"

Love it  :D

I liked this quote from Alex Haley, author of "Roots" which I loved watching .

In all of us, there is a hunger.
Mirror deep, To know our heritage,
To know who we are, and where we came from,
 Without this enriching knowledge,
 There is a hollow yearning.

Certainly true of us lot eh?    Dolly

An Oldie, but a goodie!

"I'm My Own Grandpa"

Now, many many years ago
When I was twenty three
I was married to a widow
Who was pretty as could be

This widow had a grown-up daughter
Had hair of red
My father fell in love with her
And soon the two were wed

This made my dad my son-in-law
And changed my very life
My daughter was my mother
'Cause she was my father's wife

To complicate the matters
Even though it brought me joy
I soon became the father
Of a bouncing baby boy

My little baby then became
A brother-in-law to dad
And so became my uncle
Though it made me very sad

For if he was my uncle
That also made him the brother
Of the widow's grown-up daughter
Who, of course, was my step-mother

I'm my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
I'm my own grandpa

My father's wife then had a son
That kept them on the run
And he became my grandchild
For he was my daughter's son

My wife is now my mother's mother
And it makes me blue
Because, she is my wife
She's my grandmother too

I'm my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
I'm my own grandpa

Now, if my wife is my grandmother
Then, I am her grandchild
And every time I think of it
It nearly drives me wild

For now I have become
The strangest case you ever saw
As the husband of my grandmother
I am my own grandpa

I'm my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
I'm my own grandpa

I'm my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
I'm my own grandpa

I think Willie Nelson sings this on YouTube
