Albert George Taylor
« on: Friday 10 December 04 23:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
looking for Albert George Taylor who emigrated to Australia 1877/78. He arrived in NSW. He was born in England, 1859 Paddington Middlesex. Father George, mother Celia. It could very well be that he called himself George Taylor instead of Albert George.
Can anyone tell me how I can find the date and place he arrived in Autralia. And when he left England (ship?). I haven't got a clue how to start looking for Albert, so any help at all is grately appreciated.

Hello MM
I found what may be a death record for your George
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm

Registration Number  Last Name  Given Name(s)  Father's Given Name(s)  Mother's Given Name(s)  District
5311/1896  TAYLOR  ALBERT G  GEORGE  CELIA  ALBURY
(Albury is on the border between NSW and Victoria)

You can purchase the certificate from the above site - OR for a lesser amount purchase via a transcription agent - listed on this page.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToSearch.htm

Given that the informant knew the names of his parents, the death certificate will probably give you age at death, reason etc. , location
wife and children (if married) length of time in Australia and which states he lived in. The length may give a more accurate arrival time.

I looked at the more common shipping sites and didn't find his arrival.

Hi Trish,
thank you for your reply.  Someone mailed me a copy of the death-cert. He was in Australia about 18 yrs. 4 in Victoria and 11 in NSW. That would mean that he arrived in NSW about 1878. I don't know if he was single or married. But he was married to Ada Reeves in 1886 in NSW. On his marriage cert. it said he was a bachelor. So he must have been single when entering NSW. However the name of his father on the marriage cert. was Robert. That is false. His father was George. Any explanation for this mistake?
Will keep on trying to find him. Thanks for the info.
regards

I can give no reason for the error on certificate - apart from the fact that people didn't always tell the truth! I found this on the Vic immigrants list

TAYLOR ALBERT 28 JUL 1878 ACONCAGUA B 361 004  - which has his age out by 10 years, but it could be a transcription error - or again an extension of the truth.

If you can find someone visiting the victorian archives you may be able to get it checked. This site is worth trying for archives lookups
http://www.raogk.org/australia.htm  -check the Victoria (Melbourne) volunteers.

Trish

The site mentioned by Valerie is continually updated - nothing there at the minute for Jul 1878 (but due soon)
