The Hope Inn, Wisbech
« on: Wednesday 11 July 07 17:52 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out who ran the Hope Inn in and around 1939.  It turns out that my cousin was visiting there on the day War broke.  Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks

MMMMM  Have to see what I can do for you.  I know that sometime in the 50s and 60s, an old mate of mine lived there with his family.  they were the Willoughbys and I was asked to do a pen and ink drawing of the pub before the canal was filled in., http://members.aol.com/kstockley/gallery2.htm

I know that somewhere or other, I may have a couple of old photos of the pub.  Have to have a search around for them.

What a coincidence that someone else on this board had an ancestor living at the Hope Inn in the early 1900s, and was enquiring only a couple of weeks ago

Hi David

Guess this was another one I have missed due to illness, but I am slowly getting things back into order.  I have been spending most of my research time with those on the Wisbech board.  I've found a lot over the last couple of weeks, so have put the Hope on my list of jobs to do.  Kellys will be my next when I get time.

Evening Ricky ...... More or less.  Right next door to the Empire and the ARgos/Somerfield loading bays.  Close to the canal side that the patrons are alledgedly to have used to cool thier beer.

Have found one of the photos I had.   I can't find the one that I did a drawing from, but the other one I had from my mate Richard Willoughby, is the same as the Frith one, though for some reason, not as good.  The one I did the drawing from, had the gas holder in Chase Street, in the background.  I have also done another one of the Shipwright's Arms in Brigstock Road/Crabmarsh.

I have checked up in Kellys for 1904, but for some reason, the Hope Inn is not included.  Come to that, there are several Public Houses not included.

I have also got a transcript from2The Inns and Taverns of Wisbech," which states: "Hope Inn, by the canal, situated on the opposite side of the road to 'The Case Is Altered' on the south end of the Horsefair.  From 1873 onward it has been under the tenancy of Bouch, Hellis, Barnes, Hotson, Randall, Bartram and Firth."  Don't know if any of those names help out.  Maybe more of Kellys Directories in the library can help.

Anyway, this is a copy of the photo I have had for several years from Richard Willoughby

Thanks to all for the info. , especially the photo, it's been a great help, but .....
My cousin is in her 70s and so relying on childhood memories.  I've run the surnames past her but they ring no bells.  What she did say was that the pub was near an Abbatoir.  So, does anyone know whether the Hope was near an Abbatoir?  If not I suppose that she may have the wrong pub, in which case ar/were there any other Wisbech pubs with "Hope" in their name (Hope & Anchor, Cape of Good Hope)?  If there were, again I'm looking for who was there in 1939.
Sorry to be a pain but "brickwalls" are blooming annoying.
Cheers
Peter

Hi Peter

There was another inn - the Hope and Anchor, but that was in Norfolk Street.

There was an abbatoir, but the only one I can remember, was on the North side of the river off Chapel Road, down the Cattle Market Chase.  That closed in the 70s.  I can't find any reference to an abbatoir on the south side of the river, but I will get my magnifying glass out and have a look.  Or once again, Kellys Directory.
