No, it takes more than that to frighten a ferret!

Mind you don't hold your breath with regard to solving any mysteries - I might just be adding to them!

OK the story so far:

Thomas Walsham married Ann, don't know where don't know when.

They had 2 children, that I know of:

Thomas Augustus Walsham c. 25.12.1804, St. Mary the Less, Cambridge
(don't know anymore about Thomas Augustus)

George Walsham c. 26.02.1806, St. Mary the Less, Cambridge

George married Rebecca Wilkinson in 1821 at Ely Holy Trinity
They had 5 children:

William b. abt. 1823, Ely - he was a boot maker and lived in London (have exact addresses if interested) William married and had children - again have info - just ask.

Sarah b. abt. 1826, Ely - Sarah was a servant for a solicitor in Market Place, Ely in 1841.

Jane b. abt. 1828, Ely - married William KNIGHTS in Boylestrone, Derbyshire
(have lots more info. as this is the Walsham I am descended from).

John b. abt. 1831, Ely - John was a plasterer -again addresses known

James b. abt 1833, Ely - don't know anything about him!

Other Walsham's I have gathered:

Charles L. b. c. 1837, St. Mary's, Ely - married Elizabeth b. c. 1839, Ely - In the 1871 census Charles is a labourer in an iron works and Elizabeth is a teacher of music. They are living at 5 Grove Terrace, Newington, Lambeth. 3 children

Charles (above's father I think)
Married Mary and they had 5 children, Charles, William, James Robert (married and had issue), Alexander, Janet (married and had issue)
All born in Ely.

I have more Walsham's from Ely, but I wonder if they are the same ones as yours that are floating around without joining onto anyone?

Robert b. c. 1801 married Ellen and had issue

Jesse b. c. 1771 married Sarah
In the 1841 census Jesse is a shoemaker.
In the 1851 census Jesse is a pauper shoemaker, his wife is a blind pauper.

Have we found a match - interested to know who you are descended from.

Hmm,
I need to write yours down in front of me to see if there is anything obvious..so for now here's where I come in...

Charles S. Walsham belongs to me as follows...
1871 5 Grove  Terrace, , Stoke Newington
as you listed..

also in Ely, Cambridge - Lymm Road
David Bridgeman, h, wid, 58, carpenter, Ely
Martha Bridgeman, unm, daug, 30, housekeeper, Ely
Charles Walsham, gson, 7, London,Surrey

Their daughter Alice married Henry G. Turner and lived in Greenwich
Agnes I think died as a child.
and this could be Edith

Marriages Sep 1896

Bowdidge William Baron Greenwich 1d 1889
Walsham Edith Eliza Greenwich

I do think his father was Charles who married Mary.

1841 census for Ely
14B Cow Lane
Chas WALSHAM 25 Wheelwright Y
No 5 Mary WALSHAM 25 Y
Chas WALSHAM 4 Y
Willm WALSHAM 2 Y
/ William HAMMENCE 15 Ap Wheelwrigh

1851c Ely St Marys H0 107/1764 498A
West End

Charles WALSHAM H M 38 Wheelwright Cam Downham
Mary WALSHAM Wf M 36 " wife London
Charles S WALSHAM S U 13 Errand boy Cam Ely
William S WALSHAM S U 11 Scholar " "
James R WALSHAM S U 9 " " "
Susan WALSHAM D U 4 " " "
Frances WALSHAM D U 2 Cam Downham
Infant WALSHAM S U 1week Cam Ely

Mary's maiden name was possibly Stevenson married 1844. although this was after Charles was born so not sure.

You have more children too.

I descend from James Robert, he was my 2x great grandfather (if all this is correct) he moved and married in Liverpool.
The name Charles continued through the Walsham family.

no. 277 St. Peter's Church, Liverpool (parish church, Church St)
20th Aug 1866
James Robert Walsham, full, batchelor, musician, Taylor Street, Charles Walsham, builder
Sarah Ann Leeke, full, spinster, Taylor St, Samuel Leeke, machinist?
after Banns , both signed, witnesses Charles Bufley/Buxley? Leeke, Annie Dodd

and there endeth any further references to Ely.

There was a Charles chr. 1812 to a Charles and Susan in Downham.
Also to a charles & Susan was Jabez 1824, Mary wilson Walsham 1821 and a robert W. Walsham 1814.
So connecting the periods 1813 - 1824...

so to be honest I am none the wiser...

is there any link between St. Mary the Less and ely Holy Trinity?

James was a music teacher and apparently played in Ely Cathedral...are there any musicians in your branches?

There wasn't a particular link between the two occupations of shoemakers and wheelwrights as far as I know either.

Hi,

Don't think there's any conncection between St. Mary the Less and Ely Holy Trinity, although I haven't checked this out.

As for music connections - there certainly are but from the Knights' family who married into the Walsham's. My grandfather Knights played the violin and his brothers played the piona and organ, they were all in Ely Cathedral Choir too. (not sure where that talent's gone!)

Mostly my Walsham's were boot makers and plasterers.

Hi Yoz

I've already posted all info on Charles I'm afraid - sorry if I got your hopes up.

I'll write all of them down and have a good look, see if anything leaps out at me!

Do you have information about Charles from the 1841 census?  I have the CD: if you want me to look for you just let me know.

Hi Sue

I have the following on James Robert:

born about 1842 in Ely he married Sarah Ann Leake, who was born in about 1847 in Dublin, Ireland. In the 1871 census they were living in Liverpool and he was a professor of music, by 1901 they had moved to West Derby.

James and Sarah had 4 children, that I know of:

James H born c. 1868
Edgar born c. 1869
Annie born c. 1884
Marie born c. 1885

This is information I have gathered from the census returns.

Hope this helps, I haven't been able to sit down with the rest of the info yet, had a pretty awful week as it was a friends' funeral on Thursday.

Thanks Ferret,
I have all this..I found Sarah's maiden name via her marriage record though, I don't recall seeing it in any census record, can you remember which one? Was there mention of other family members by the name of Leake?

I appreciate your help though,
Sue.
