Lost Cornishman
« on: Saturday 14 July 07 21:22 BST (UK) »
Dreadfully careless of me, but I've lost a Cornishman, so I was wondering if the wonderful folks on this board could have a look for him in Australia, no idea which state, sorry.
Joseph Bosisto was born 10/1/1819 in St John's, Sithney, near Helston in Cornwall. His parents were George Bosisto and Frances (Fanny) nee Russell.
He was on the 1841 census in Sithney as a schoolmaster.
He married Susan Catherine Rogers in 1845, but she died aged 18 the following year. My last record of him is in 1851 when he is living in Clifton, Gloucestershire with his brother William, and is enumerated as an ironmonger's assistant.
I've found his brother, Reuben, in the US, first in Wisconsin, then Iowa. No sign of Joseph.
Another brother, Simeon Russell Bosisto b. 1823, went to South Australia. He was married to Caroline George, and had a son Reginald and a daughter Evelyn before they emigrated.
Any google search brings up a different Joseph Bosisto, the one involved with eucalyptus oil, who married Eliza Johnston in 1852.

Is there any sign of him anywhere? The name seems to lend itself to different spellings - Bosesto, Bosustow, Basesto and others, no doubt.

I'd be very grateful for any info.

Hi Osprey

There is a death in Victoria in 1885 for a Jos Bosisto age 65 (b. c 1820). Unfortunately parents  are listed as Unknown. Ref 11127. If he came to Oz via SA it is quite likely that he ended up in Victoria - many went there looking for gold. There is also a death for an Eliza Bosisto in the same year. parents given as Jas Stirling and Margaret Bradley. I will look for a marriage (or is this the "other" man?)

Trish

Edit: I don't instantly see a marriage but there is a marriage for an Eliza Bosisto Stirling and Alfred Cutting Colton in 1886  ???

Hi Trish,

that looks a possible - the 'other' Joseph died in 1898 and had no children. The age is good. If there is a marriage, at least he would have been there to give parents names, so I would be grateful.

Hi Jenn,

I'd love some details for Simeon's family. I've come across the family on someone else's online tree, but I'd like to know for sure.

Thank you both for your help. Joseph is the only one of my gggrandmother's 10 siblings that I've not been able to find.

Hi Trish and all,
There is an entry in the Australian biographie online for the WRONG Joseph Bosisto.
http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A030187b.htm

His initial business premises was very close to my home and there is a street close to here named after him.

Does everyone think that  "JOS"  necesarrily means Joseph.  It might be Joshua so still the wrong person?
Sue

think Jos. is normally Joseph. Can't spot a Joshua in Cornwall but it would be good to know even if just to eliminate him from the search.

I have a list of references to the name in 'Names in Government Gazettes Victoria'. The info is copyright so I can't post it here. Most of the references are to the eucalyptus oil man, but a couple of them might not be. There's one relating to South Extended Black Forest Gold Mining Co.
Is there anyway of getting more details for these Government Gazettes? I also have reference to another possible lost relative in the Gazettes but uncollected letters this time.

Thanks for you help.

On second thoughts the references to Joseph Bosisto in Richmond are to the 'other' one as he was on the council and mayor there. Probably accounts for Bridgewater on Loddon Cemetery as well.
