Bradwell Lookup - ARCHER
« on: Wednesday 18 July 07 16:10 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me in the search for which Inn in Bradwell that my ancestors John & Ann Archer ran in the 1850's .
I have looked at the Directory of 1835 for Bradwell & found only four Inns listed...The Bulls Head,The George & Dragon,The Rose & Crown & Lastly The White Hart.
John & Ann lived in Bradwell until  their deaths within a few months of each other in 1879.
I think that they could be buried in Bradwell but would need help in locating their grave.
They had  one of their sons baptised in nearby Castleton in 1834.

Archer  surname kirkburton Yorkshire & Brampton Derbyshire 1800-present
Bottomley surname (Possibly Quakers) shepley Yorkshire
Doyle surname 1800-1900 Kerry Ireland..Fleming Surname 1830-1900 Kerry Ireland

1861 has them living in Towngate - do you have addresses for the pubs?

1851 has him as a toll collector and shoemaker HO107; Piece: 2151; Folio: 434; Page: 16 - they have been indexed as Arther - if you do not have the details - please post but I am assuming you do.

best wishes

Many thanks for for your information.
I had found them on on 1861 Census but was unable to decifer the address, which I now take to be "Towngate". The No. of Towngate is 139.  Do you know if the Pub "The White Hart" is this address?

Also I have just managed to trace Ann Archer's buriel date in Bradwell as 28th Oct. 1879.
It was on a list compiled by a Michael Spencer and it states that it is only a selection.
Does anybody know which buriel ground was around then?
Her address at death was "Little Hicklow (or Hucklow") I cannot seem to find this on the street map & wonder what present day street it is now?

what a good idea- I am just in the middle of trying to prove that it is the White Hart- comparing the 1851 census and 1861 census, there are Middletons, Randalls in roughly the same places (Town Street in 1851) There is an Ellis Needham living at the White Hart Inn.
Could be...  :-\

Did you find the White Hart on the 1861 Census. I went through a number of pages around Towngate but no luck.

Success

I rang the Pub as suggested & the Landlady says that she has a picture on her wall of the Pub with the name Archer underneath it.

Many Many thanks to you all for your help.
