Anyone going to East Lothian family history centre???
« on: Thursday 26 July 07 14:06 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the death of my gggg grandfather.

His name is Robert Anderson and he was born c1803 in Haddington. His wife was called Joan Shiells.

The last census I have him on is the 1851, so he died somewhere between 1851 anf 1861. His residence in 1851 was Nungate and his occupation was a Wright.

I can't find his death on Scotland People, so it may well be that he died between 1851 and 1855. If anyone going to the above history centre can help me to find his death it would be much appreciated.

thanks, Siobhan

Hi Siobhan

You can email localhistory@eastlothian.gov.uk and ask them to check their records,it may take a bit of time and a small fee for any photo copies.I have had great success in the past as it is too far for me to travel.

I now have Robert Anderson's burial record. He died on 27th April 1852 from a Fever age 54 which would make him born approx 1798.

On the 1851 census he place of birth is Haddington, but no birth appears for a Robert Anderson in Haddington for this period.

The only birth record on the IGI is as below:

Could this be him, how close is it to Haddington. How do I go about proving his parents.

Thanks,

Siobhan

Hi Siobhan,

Gladsmuir parish adjoins Haddington parish, lying to its west side. From Gladsmuir village to Nungate, Haddington is about 6km (about 4 miles). To see a map showing the parishes, go to http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/os_scotland_2nd_ed_list.html and select Sheet 33 - Haddington.

Haddington is the orange coloured parish above left of the centre of the map. Gladsmuir is the pink-coloured parish immediately left of Haddington. If you zoom in on Haddington town, you will find Nungate across the river just east of the town centre.

how would I go about proving his parents. Been struggling with this one for a while

Hi Siobhan,

There is a possibility that it could be him, if his birthplace was wrong on the 1851 census. But in truth, from the evidence you have it is only a guess that this is him born in Gladsmuir parish. If you are happy to accept a guess because it is the best fit you can find, that is up to you. Personally I would not accept this as the right one. It may be that there is no evidence recorded that survives to take you to Robert's birth and parents.

However it would be worth trying to track down an MI for him. You can hope that somewhere there is a headstone that you can find a Robert Anderson who died on 27th April 1852. Then you have to hope that his parents names are also on the headstone.
