although I can't find my G Grandfather :(

I havent been able to find 3 of my grt grandfathers either, although I think these are only disability pensions, so not finding an ancestor probably means they were not injured or suffered any problems as a result of active service.

Hmm. Interesting. I've just found someone who served from 1893 until he was discharged in 1911. He was then put on the reserve list. He claimed to be aged 18 years and 1 month when he enlisted in 1893.

I'm pretty sure I know who this person is. His surname is very uncommon; his stated occupation is correct; his mother's name and address (next of kin) fits exactly.

Problem: The person I am thinking of was actually 24 years old in July 1893!

Question: Why would someone deliberately understate their age when enlisting?

Incidentally the person I am thinking of was killed in action on 30 Dec 1914. The CWGC record has his correct age (45) but the service number is different. Does this mean I've got the wrong chap?

Dave
