I am totally staggered !   I'm off-line for about 9 hours (visitor for l - o - n - g lunch) and when I return, there are about 16 replies and lots of info.  I havent had time to absorb it all yet, but will get back to you all when I've read it through.  We might yet find someone to give the stuff to.

Has anyone decided or found out what 'entered his quarter' means ?

Hi Lydart,

If you Google for
"entered his quarter"
(with the quotes) there are some hits relating to laying claim to land (quarter = quarter-section = 160 acres) in the US but that seems unlikely in England in 1799 ...

Yes, seems very unlikely for UK in 1799, and if it was that reason, why would he celebrate it, or be given a massive Bible to celebrate it ?

Bibles were often given as celebratory gifts ...

Here's another, no doubt irrelevant, thought.

From:

A Richard GRIFFITHS was a Surveyor of roads in Glamorgan ...

And some other Richard GRIFFITHSs:

just a thought . you found the mariage between thomas Humphreys and annie jones - 1918 why not search from 1918 for all the births of humphreys childeren who's mothers maiden name was jones ? that way there is a 50% chance you might untangle the future generations - of course you would have to have acess to the Ancestry BMD from 1837 - 1983 ? worth a try if you have some spare time on your hands

that is how i got further forward in my tree and every relative i have found on Genes Reunited , my calculations turned out correct! however if you are actually searching common surnames you can be sat there days so you want to hope none of the humphreys married a smith of jones  :)

Hi
Just wondering if 'entered his quarter' meant entering his 25th year or quarter century? There is an extracted IGI entry which is a possible  fit

Richard Griffiths 18th Jun 1775 at High Ercall father Thomas

I found this site - he doesn't appear to be a descendant of the right Richard but might know someone who is - trouble is I can't see a way of contacting him :( Can anyone else?
