Willam McGregor/Hancock 1834
« on: Monday 30 July 07 18:42 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can tell me why the surname of my GGG Grandfather changes on the census?

On the 1861 census he is William McGregor 1834 Southwell.
On the 1871 census I found him under McHancock.
On the 1881 census he is McGregor again.
On the 1891 census he is McGregor Hancock and on the 1901 he is William Mc G Hancock!

His family seem to be under different names too. Is there an explanation or am I missing something?

Thanks
Linda

Hi Linda,

I think this may not be straightforward…..I hope others will step in for the challenge.
But here is a little to start things off; looking at the 1881 RG11/3341 / 8/9 William McGregor has visitors – Jane Hancock aged 22 with who I assume are her two children Rebecca aged 3 and Leonard aged 10 months….

These baptisms from NFHS index
Parish Lenton – Abode  Lenton
LEONARD HANCOCK – father Gedling Hancock, mother Jane – born 17th May 1880, baptised 5th January 1882, fathers occupation – Chimney Sweep

Nottingham St Barnabas Cathedral R.C.
LEONARD HANCOCK  - father Gedling Hancock, mother Jane McGregor – born 18th May 1880, baptised 15th January 1886

Marriage at Basford St Leodegarius
GEDLING HANCOCK & JANE McGREGOR – 15th May 1877
There is also this marriage at Radford Christ Church
William GARDENER & Harriet Hancock McGREGOR – 28th October 1878

Regards

Sheila.

Hi Linda,

A little bit more…I expect you already have the marriage details? And probably some of the baptism details but the only link I can come up with is ; that William and Elizabeth’s daughter Jane married a Hancock......
Another strange thing, here is Jane’s late baptism and also it’s not in her married name……
Jane McGREGGOR, father William, mother Elizabeth WHITTAKER, born 7th July 1859 baptised 5th Nov 1889 - Nottingham St Barnabas Cathedral R.C. – Abode Ilkeston Rd
Do you need the other baptism’s for William McGREGOR  & Elizabeth Whittaker children?

Regards

Sheila.

Hi Linda
I would think its all to do with illegitimacy. I had a similar case with a man in Cornwall who was se baptism is recorded in the parish register on the same day that his parents married, but he was baptised under his mother's maiden name. When he had his own family he registered some children under his father's name, Sleep; some children under his mother's maiden name, Saunders; and others  as Sleep Saunders and Saunders Sleep.

You probably have these

James Mc Gregor bt 8/8/1830 Upton by Southwell parents Daniel Mc Gregor and Maria
Robert Hancock Mc Gregor bt 23/10/1831 Upton by Southwell mother Maria
William Hancock Mc Gregor bt 4/8/1833 Upton by Southwell mother Maria
Mary Ann Hancock Mc Gregor bt 4/8/1833 Upton by Southwell mother Maria.

Perhaps someone could find out if/when Daniel Mc Gregor died.

Eric

Allesley, Bloxham from c. 1815
Foleshill, Gee (Jee) Adams Millerchip
Burton Dassett, Bloxham to c. 1815

Hi Sheila & Linda

If Maria died in 1837 it would be useful to know who was looking after the children in the 1841 census, and whether they were still together. Was  dad, ??? Hancock doing his duty?!!!

Hi Linda,

I think the William & James that Eric has found are on the 1851 with Simon & Rebecca Hancock…
1851 = HO107/ 2129/ 241/ 15, Lowes Yard,Lenton – both the right age and both say they are born in Southwell
On the 1851 Simon Hancock is with wife Rebecca and describe William and James as their sons,
I have looked for baptisms with the father as Simon Hancock but these came up….

Sarah McGreggor HANCOCK, father Simon, mother MARIA 6th Dec 1835 – Radford St Peter,
abode Radford, occupation Sweep

Maria McGreggor HANCOCK, father Simon, mother MARIA, 15th Oct 1837 - Radford St Peter,
abode Radford, occupation Sweep.

So seems like Maria died in childbirth as her burial was the same day

Simon Hancock married Rebecca Cutts 20th Feb 1854 - Radford Christ Church

Regards
Sheila.
