Arclid Hall Sandbach
« on: Wednesday 01 August 07 11:46 BST (UK) »
Is anyone familiar with Arclid, Sandbach?

My grandmothers marriage certificate states that  she lived Arclid Hall, Sandbach  Her fathers occupation was a railway agent.

She always maintained that she came from a privilaged family and I am not sure if Arclid Hall referes to a district or House.

Can anyone help?

Thank you both.

Looks as if she was right.   I think I need to get it touch with cewe railway to see if I can find out exactly what her fathers occupation involved.

Many thanks,  Julie

Hello Julie

You have probably, by now, discovered that Arclid is a township situated in the parish of Sandbach?

I would recommend that you get a copy via your local library of J. P. EARWAKER's "History of The Ancient Parish of Sandbach" published in 1890.

Of Arclid Hall he says "Arclid Hall is now a farm-house, but probably stands on the site of the ancient seat of the Arclyds and Mainwarings, being placed in a well-chosen situation in a valley near the river Wheelock.  There is a nice old staircase in the Hall."

Hope this helps?

Jayson

Hi Jayson,

Many thanks for the info.
I have done some more research. On the 1901 cen there is brookside and Arclid hall Farm.  In the 1920s brookside was puchased by the Finlow family and then Aclid hall farm in 1929. At the end of the War, Brookside was renamed Arclid Hall. Sometimen in the 70s it changes again. The main house went back to Brookside hall with the farm retaining  the name Arclid Hall Farm.  Brookside is now a business centre and I was lucky enough to get in contact with a receptionist who mailed me many pages of histry on the house.
There does not appear to be a connection to my family. I now think that perhaps my Grandmother was living at the farm in possibly a workers cottage or something.
I hope to obtain her fathers death certificate shortley. He died three years before her marriage and hopefully his address at the time may help to solve the mystery.

Julie

In about 1960 Arclid Hall became a boys preparatory school called Home Leigh. Eventually it closed down but I'm not sure when.  Grogan

Hi Julie,

I don't know if you will receive this as your post is quite old or how far you got with your search on your grandmother living at Archlid Hall.

My father Tim Finlow grew up at Archlid Hall Farm - I have the auction poster from when they sold it in September 1955 in front of me! My fathers uncle owned Archlid Hall (Brooklands) at the time.
My father has a pretty good recollection of his childhood on the farm so please do get in touch if you think we may be able to fill in something on your grandmother.
