Hi,

I wouldn`t assume that Thomas was in the Army.  At the back of my mind I am sure that some Nottingham Lace Manufacturers set up business in the early 19c in Calais, France (and probaby other places too).  Also Nottingham Lace makers went out there to work.

Regards,
Mo

Indeed ....just prior to the French Revolution of 1848 there were several thousand English living and working in the Calais lace industry, many of them from Notts. A quick google should tell you their story!

Derbyshire: Starbrook
Somerset: Willmott, Elliott

I have an ancestor in the lace trade who was apparently from Lyon (or is it Lyons?), France.  This was another centre of the lace industry with connections to Nottingham.  Not sure whether he was originally from Lyon or perhaps the family moved there from Nottingham.

Sherwood.
CRESSWELL/CRESWELL (Nottingham), MARTIN (Nottingham), ARGENT (Derby), DEXTER (Derby), BAINES (Uppingham), NUTT (Uppingham), LENAGHAN/LENAGAN/LANEHEN, etc (Ireland and Stamford), WINTERS (Nottingham), SLANEY (Nottingham), BULL (Yorkshire), MITCHELL (Yorkshire)

This is one of my great grandfathers, I've also been researching him and trying to work out why they were in France. This thread has been so helpful!
