Hi
Welcome to rootschat.    Do you have any other information about this family?    Other children?   Census records etc?   I cannot see a marriage for Henry in the Clapham area on the Sussex marriage Index - I was hoping to find a bride called Owen!  I could not find them in 1841 either.
Anything else that you can add will help.

In 1861 William is married to Jane with a son aged 4, William Oswald.   Do you have their marriage certificate?   That will give an occupation for Henry.   In 1851 William is a lodger in the household of Nelson Smith, also born in Clapham.  I would assume he is a relation.  HO107 1651 F262 p7

Hi again
I wonder if you are aware of the records on www.familysearch.org?    That has the marriage of William Owen Smith to Jane Laggatt, 20 Sep 1856 in Clapham and it is an extracted record too.  I expect you have all this.

Strange!  BIVRI records two marriages for a William Owen Smith. One of them was to Jane Laggatt (daughter of James Laggatt) on 20 Sept 1856 in Clapham. But there's an earlier one to Jane LAYST on 30 August 1856 in Patching! Coincidence?

The only marriage for Henry Smith to a Harriet on the SMI is in Walberton 19 Oct 1813

Dave - I would think the earlier marriage for William Owen might be a reading of the Banns and a poor transcription.  It is very odd otherwise.

This may be Henry's baptism at Clapham:

16 August 1785, Henry, son of Richard and Sarah Smith.

But the following burial entry exists:

9 November 1804, Henry Smith.  [No age recorded in my source.]

Baptisms at Clapham of possible siblings:

2 April 1775, Elizabeth, daughter of Richard and Sarah Smith.
17 October 1779, Lydia, daughter of Richard and Sarah Smith.
3 August 1783, Esther, daughter of Richard and Sarah Smith.
9 March 1787, Jane, daughter of Richard and Sarah Smith.
13 June 1790, Amy, daughter of Richard and Sarah Smith.
20 January 1793, John, son of Richard and Sarah Smith.

Possible burial of Henry's mother:

26 November 1812, Sarah Smith.  [No age recorded in my source.]

By the first decade of the 19th century at least two other Smith families are baptising children at Clapham.  The fathers may be sons of Richard and Sarah.

I think we may be wasting our time on this one as mjw28 has not responded in any way.
