Pallots marriages - GenesReunited
« on: Tuesday 14 August 07 00:00 BST (UK) »
Hi

Has anybody ever contacted the Institution of Heraldic and Geneological Studies for further information about Pallots marriages provided on Genes?

I just found a marriage tonight, I'm fairly sure is my gr gr grandmother.  Her marriage isn't in IGI, and as it was before 1833, when she re-married, I had given up hope.

The thing is, all it gives is the names of the bride and groom, handwritten on a piece of paper, no date or place of marriage.  I've contacted the source of this info, and provided what I know, so here's hoping.

I just wondered if anybody had been successful, and got more info than it shows on genes.  Apparently these marriages didn't always appear in parish records for some reason.

Hi Rosemary,
I found the site I wanted to send you last night and added it to yesterdays Post.  I don't know if it will help you but it makes good reading.

Hi Reg

Thank you for that.  I didn't realise there was a Pallot's register for baptisms as well.  That would be helpful.  I need all the help I can get!!  Two or three of my relations have appeared on Pallots, from up in Cumbria (Moresby, and Workington).  It's strange how there are just odd ones from other districts isn't it?  I'd be interested to know how they come to be on there in the first place.

Thanks again
Rosemary

Pallots marriage index 1780-1837 is mainly an index of London parish marriages but does include entries from other counties. It is a bit pot luck as far as outside  the city of London/Middlesex is concerned. The marriages were indexed from original parish registers some of which have not survived but I think these are largely London parish registers. Each marriage was usually written on two slips indexing against each of the two peoples' surnames, so if one reference is obscure you can usually work out parish and date from the other reference. What was the marriage you were interested in?

Pallots baptism index was/is an index of baptisms in the Greater London area. It once contained 12 million baptisms which would have been fantastic, but unfortunately the index was badly damaged in enemy action in the Second World War and only 200,000 entries still exist.

:o I just realised, it was on Ancestry, not GenesReunited!!!  It must have been the wine :)

Thanks Reg for the index.  It would be nice if I could get hold of the index with my names on it.

The marriage I would like to find is John Lynch and Mary MacEvoy.  It comes up as Evoy on the index on Pallots.  As I said, there's no date or place, so it isn't a great help at the moment.  I have contacted the IHGS, and I've had a reply to say someone will contact me if they find anything.

I've just found out that Pallots baptisms are on Ancestry.com.  How is that possible?
Anyway I've had a look, and there's only one baptism in Cumberland, so that's no good to me.

Could be of use to others though
