Another collection in The Dublin City Library and Archives is the Freedom Records 1225 - 1922
The ancient Freedom of Dublin was instituted at the time of the Norman Invasion. The inhabitants of Dublin in the middle ages were either free or non-free. Holders of the freedom of the city were known as ‘Free Citizens’ and were entitled to special trading privileges and the right to vote in parliamentary and municipal elections.

The thirteenth-century Guild-hall, the headquarters of the Merchants' Guild and in effect the first city hall of Dublin, was located in Winetavern Street The late medieval Merchants' Hall, known as the Tholsel, stood at the top of Nicholas Street just north of the present ruins of St. Nicholas's Church
